Beautiful new LHD and from thje looks of it, very capable too.

Displaces 32,500 tons
Can carry up to 15 F-35Bs
Carriers anti-air missiles, up to 16 Ater 15 and 30, or up to 32 CAMM ER missiles

460 crew
Max of 1064 Marines

Like I said, a good LHD with a very decent well deck for 4 LCUs or 1 LCAC and hangar for the helos and fighters.

Just an FYI. It's Fitted For But Not With for the missiles. If they do add them its difficult to ascertain what they intend to do. CAMM-ER covers part of the Aster15 role, but without regular CAMM alongside it might not be as effective against pop-up threats as Aster 15.

They've also just installed a ski jump on her....

They must have fabricated it dockside and winched it on like QE's, but kept quiet about it when it was being made/planned, it was probably sat there ready to go before it was launched... . All for political reasons...

Well, I am not too surprised by the ski-jump. They did indicte that it would carry F-35Bs as required.

Navy Says More Experts Coming to Work Ford Carrier Elevator Delays

Meanwhile, the Navy is constructing a land-based AWE test site at Naval Surface Warfare Center Division Philadelphia, due to be finished in 2020. A digital twin, located at the shipyard in Newport News, is expected to be completed this fall. Both systems will help the Navy troubleshoot problems. In the near term, what will likely happen is Ford’s crew will prepare for deployment with only some of AWEs working.

They will have the onshore testbed 15 years after the start of the construction of the first unit : O

Maybe I am a bit old fashioned, but this things supposed to be done BEFORE the start of construction .

Best should be to do the onshore testbed before the finalisation of the drawings.

@asif iqbal It's this new one the Italians are building now. Hull was completed and launched in May 0f this year. Supposed to be commissioned in 2022.

Jeff Head} Beautiful new LHD and from the looks of it said:

Nice. Now the Italians will be able to field two carriers whenever they need them.

Internal leak prompts HMS Queen Elizabeth to return to port earlier than expected

Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth made a surprise return to Portsmouth on July 9, despite having been expected to spend another week at sea in preparation for a training deployment to the US coast.

The carrier was forced to return to its homeport due to an internal water leak which was confirmed by a Royal Navy spokesperson to

an independent online campaign to promote the Royal Navy.

“Following a minor issue with an internal system, the ship’s company were required to remove a small volume of water from the ship. An investigation into the cause is underway,” the campaign quoted the spokesperson as saying.

“At no point was there damage or breach to the hull. The ship, which was due to return to Portsmouth for a planned maintenance period later in the week, is now returning earlier than planned. This is a precautionary measure and the cause of the issue is now under investigation.”

HMS Queen Elizabeth had been underway for flag officer sea training (FOST) trials after coming out of its first-ever dry-docking period in Rosyth. This is the second time the ship has had issues with leaks after a propeller shaft leak was discovered in late 2017.

The ship is scheduled to start the final phase of flight trials, this time with UK-owned F-35B jets, later this year.
