Rules are clear now:
1. there is no freedom of navigation on the world oceans, that exist only if you have guns to enforce it.

2. If a country sanction another country then it is legal to confiscate any ships belonging to the sanctioned country .

It is blatant provocation, when you pull out of a deal that was agreed upon by all parties. And then impose sanctions, to stifle a country's economy. That's airly reminiscent of imperial britain

Trump Admin Moves Fueled Iran’s Aggression, U.S. Intel Says
‘Most of the activities that the Iranians are undertaking are in response to our very aggressive posture in the region,’ one member of the House Intelligence Committee said.
....
Members of Congress who fear war with Iran say they hope Trump will err on the side of restraint. Rep. Mike Quigley, an Illinois Democrat on the House intelligence committee, said the situation could flare up fast.

Please someone explain to me which ‘international law’ allows navies to intercept foreign ships in international waters for allegedly breaching non-UN sanctions?

If China or Russia announced unilateral sanctions on say Japan, does anyone here think the west would just say ‘fair enough’ for Chinese and Russian warships to intercept commercial shipping in international waters heading to or from Japan?

It’s a question of where she was then. The course she was designed on is close damn close to Spanish/Gibraltar/EU waters. The seizure was done by British forces out of Gibraltar which has a dispute with Spain. But both are EU. If she entered those waters. Well it’s like the Global Hawk shoot down. Was it in Iranian airspace or close to it?
I know what some will say... but it’s that kind of dispute now.
