At the point sovereign immunity is revoked.
There is no sovereign immunity.

I am sure the WTO rules, and many more things contain provisions against exactly these types of event.

We all know what happened when Japan acquiesed at the Plaza accords, ended up 40 years of lost growth. Japan might not have had a choice, because of the US military bases etc, but Xi /CCP cannot afford to make the same mistake.

China will not let Huawei fail, and it doesn't seem US will go "back to normal".... even if Trump kicked out of office in 2021, the larger US geopolitically strategy of China/East containment will not significantly change. In American's thinking even if it cannot reverse China, it will do its best to contain China as much as it can for as long as possible, to slow China down to its best ability. For that reason, while I see a temporarily stop of escalation, its not certain that the tariffs that are preexisting today will ever go away. both sides are restructuring, decoupling, and US thinks this way it is a roll of the dice that outcome might favor America. If US continues to "normal" they know China will soon surpass, but they feel if roll the dice it could end up in a USSR situation were China breaks apart, they install Taiwan leaders (wishful thinking but still some think it) and then America gets to lead another 100 years.

Agreed

This is an old thread from 3 years ago, but it's still relevant when looking at the Soviet collapse versus China today.

U.S.-China Trade War a Great Concern for Thailand, Prayuth Says
Bloomberg

The U.S.-China trade war is a serious concern for Thailand that has the potential to undermine global business, Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-Ocha said.

"We have to alleviate this tension and create a greater balance," Prayuth said in a speech at the Bloomberg Asean Business Summit in Bangkok on Friday. The trade dispute had led to "greater uncertainty in the global economic situation and greater competition," he said, noting Thailand was trying to expedite the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership trade agreement.

U.S. Blacklists More Chinese Tech Companies Over National Security Concerns

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration added five Chinese entities to a United States blacklist on Friday, further restricting China’s access to American technology and stoking already high tensions as President Trump and President Xi Jinping of China prepare to meet in Japan next week.

The Commerce Department

that it would add four Chinese companies and one Chinese institute to an “entity list,” saying they posed risks to American national security or foreign policy interests. The move essentially bars the entities, which include one of China’s leading supercomputer makers, Sugon, and a number of its subsidiaries set up to design microchips, from buying American technology and components without a waiver from the United States government.

The move could all but cripple these Chinese businesses, which rely on American chips and other technology to manufacture advanced electronics. Those added to the entity list also include Higon, Chengdu Haiguang Integrated Circuit, Chengdu Haiguang Microelectronics Technology, and Wuxi Jiangnan Institute of Computing Technology, which lead China’s development of high performance computing, some of which is used in military applications like simulating nuclear explosions, the Commerce Department said.

It follows similar efforts to ban other Chinese tech companies from accessing American technology, including telecom equipment giant Huawei, which was added to the blacklist in May. The administration is also considering adding Hikvision, a surveillance-technology company, to the list,

to add tariffs to an additional $300 billion of Chinese products unless China agrees to a trade deal.

But a fast resolution is looking increasingly unlikely. Both sides

of foreign companies and people, an apparent first step toward retaliating against the United States for denying vital American technology to Chinese companies.

Sugon is one of China’s most important makers of high-performance computers and servers, with 10 out of the top 20 fastest supercomputers in China, according to China’s TOP100 rankings in 2018. The immensely powerful machines serve entities including China’s government and power weather prediction capabilities and its largest technology companies.

Most are also studded with American technology — in most cases the computers rely on a mix of microchips from Intel and Nvidia. By placing the company on the list, the Trump administration would effectively cut it off from the tiny brains it needs to make the billions of calculations required to model weather patterns and support video apps and online shopping.

Also on the list was a Sugon subsidiary that had formed a partnership with the American chip maker Advanced Micro Devices to create microchips that could satisfy security demands for Chinese government customers. Some Chinese officials said the chips could be used in

. By relying on chips made by AMD and Intel, Sugon’s supercomputers are able to run a wider array of software than some of the country’s faster computers built around domestically produced chips.

With just over $1 billion in revenue last year, Sugon is tiny compared to Huawei, which was placed on the entity list last month. Still, its exclusion from American technology will represent an especially bitter pill for Beijing to swallow, as its supercomputers form the core of some of the Chinese government’s most sensitive and important systems.

Sugon supercomputers support State Grid, the monopoly that runs China’s electric grid; China Mobile, the country’s largest telecom services provider; and the China Meteorological Administration, which runs weather prediction. It also makes data centers for companies like e-commerce giant JD.com and Bytedance, the owner of social media app TikTok.

The companies could still obtain a license to purchase American technology. But their presence on the list suggests that they would receive intense scrutiny, and such an approval might be unlikely.

western does have better freedom of speech/press etc. I hate trump, i can bash or make fun of him. i can't do that in china with Xi. Not a single day goes by where media doesnt bashing or make fun of trump. personal freedom(what to eat, what to buy, where to visit etc etc), about the same. but probably shouldn't get into politic, off topic.
The part I put in boldface, in fact is the very reason why you feel free to bash Trump! But if you try the same among a group of Trumpeters you will be lucky to get away with simply a cold stare.

These days, at the personal, face-to-face level, there is very little serious political debate in the US between people on opposite sides of the aisle, especially among Americans. When it takes place, it quickly degenerates into emotionalism... and then ends with frowns. This is true on both sides.

Meanwhile, take note that when you bash Trump, you are not bashing the state, the social and economic system, "way of life", etc. When a Chinese person bashes Xi, indeed, I think it has bigger significance. Immediately questions arise, when I see this: does this person want a "revolution" in China? Is this person simply not political, and given to following Tang Dynasty TV? Is this person bullshitting me, because, after all, I'm not Chinese? And so on.

Trump’s tariffs have cost Americans at least $22 billion since the trade war began, report says
Gina Heeb
Jun. 20, 2019, 03:03 PM
  • President Donald Trump's trade policies cost Americans tens of billions of dollars in their first year, even before major tariff escalations took place.
  • The pricetag of levies by the Trump administration added up to $22 billion through April, according to a new report.
  • While Trump and his administration claim that tariffs hurt foreign exporters, evidence suggests that businesses and consumers at home pay the price

KEY POINTS
  • In a little known fact, Beijing has over the past year lowered duties on goods from countries that compete with America, according to the Peterson Institute for International Economics.
  • Such a move by China has placed American firms at a “considerable cost disadvantage,” said PIIE researchers, who include notable trade expert Chad P. Bown.
  • In addition to gaining an edge against the U.S. in the trade war, lowering tariffs on products originating from other countries allows China to limit the damage on its economy, PIIE said.
  • China’s average tariff rate on U.S. goods jumped from 8% at the start of 2018 to 20.7% this month.
  • China’s average tariff rate on its imports from all other countries fell from 8% at the start of 2018 to 6.7% last November. It has stayed at that level since then.

China needs to be more educated as a whole before more freedom can be allowed imo. Maybe another generation.
There so much backward shit going on from the 50's 60's generation.

Oh right, western MSM doesn't bash China each and every day then?

Take the recent demo in Hong Kong, the MSM keeps on about "peaceful demostration" etc. Painting a false picture of whats happening, and no one journalist is offered to challenge this.

Yet, on alternative news channels and from my relatives in Hong Kong, i see students digging up streets for bricks, and metal fences for weapons. Attacking police, with police cowering behind their shields.

Yet in Paris, few weeks ago, the police treatments of the yellow jersy demostrators was much more violent, yet the news footage keep showing violence from the demostrators only!

Talk about manipulation of the masses.
