In western coporations, the amount spent on R&D is small, despite what the MSM says.
This is because of short term thinking. Most of the directors are on short term contract, say 2 to 5 years. So why should they be worry about be benefits and income in the future. They definately worry about cost today, which affects their bottom line and their big fat bonuses (I know some R&D gets amortised, and some coporations offered shares that encourage directors to invest in R&D)! But these inducement is not enough in my view!
I think you will find that only a very limited number of members here are mainlanders with no or minimal exposure to the west, its tendencies, and its history. It is much more likely that a majority are either born, raised, studying, studied, worked, or are working in the west.

FYI, I also have conversations with Chinese people outside the office and I would hardly call them empty. But they're not exactly a representative sample, given how they are either researchers at academic institutions or at industry R&D departments, and at least 80% of them hold a PhD.
