It's not either/or. You maximize your exploitation of the global supply chain while using your newfound gains to R&D out your supply chain vulnerabilities, starting with the worst ones that would make you most vulnerable. Eventually you end up more self-sufficient, like Samsung and hopefully Huawei someday.

As long as better alternative from the west is available Chinese high tech industry will choose the western tech Meantime the domestic semiconductor or semi tool will be starve of market, funding for research and forever will be stunted in growth. Notice the comment of Ren on using Apple cellphone he said he and his family prefer to use apple product. I can't imagine Toyoda saying that

Japanese does not have that attitude right from start of industrialization at the turn of century they try to use domestic product as much as possible . It might be subpar at beginning but with time and effort they get better and better
Japanese automaker for example they promote their own supply chain , Denso in AC, and auto sensor, Renesas in auto chip etc

Somehow, the current fiasco between the 2 countries doesn't look like a negotiation. Looks more like "I want to remain top dog, and this is what you're gonna swallow for me to achieve my goal".

It's much bigger than any negotiations. The top two powers are fighting for world domination... You are looking at a war... Both sides are using every ammo they can access to gain an upper hand and win a war. Like any war, it's about winning with acceptable level of casualty to yourself. It's about your ability to throw punches and your ability to take hits. It's about finding mismatches and take advantages of your opponents' weaknesses. It's not about logic. It's not about being fair.

This article confirm what I have been saying all along Here it is. I lament the lack of self reliance spirit on the part of Chinese private enterprises. Government can only do so much without the participation of private sector It will come to naught Now they are in the pickle and offered mea culpa
Huawei and other internet giant are the worst offender
But Ren is slick. He said he wouldn't but he did. He said making everything by yourself is peasant mentality, so Trump's analysts thought they'd catch an old fool flat-footed only to find that he'd been having secret meetings the whole the time about his spare tire projects! Unless Ren meant it at the time and then changed his mind right after, this would be a very Sun Tzu moment. After the US was purposefully misled to believe that a tech ban would fry Huawei, it implemented the tactic only to find that it is not only ineffective but has fallen into the trap of creating simultaneously distrust in China of foreign parts and a gaping need in China's domestic market, finally galvanizing China's tech powers to invest in core technologies. Nothing that Beijing could do would move these lazy greedy gluts so Ren tricked the US to do Beijing's dirty work. Well, that's one hell of a story and I don't know how smart Ren is, but if he planned all this using Huawei as bait, then he would easily be the Zhu Geliang of this century.

WOW! That's naive to even say that from Ren. I'm surprised, in marketing, you should always show that you are backing your product. This is why in my days all the top bosses in the car industries drives around in their own brand cars as opppsed to top of the range luxury models from a premium brand.

Its not sending a postive image about your own product

‘Fake news’ about China trade dents credibility of US

As US President Donald Trump levels accusations of "fake news" and stirs up distrust of the media, he also keeps making mistakes when it comes to economic data and continues a trade war with China based on "fake" figures.

Trump was quoted by the Washington Post and the New York Times as saying that "We have never taken in 10 cents from China. We would lose $500 billion a year with China." It isn't the first time such figures were mentioned by Trump. According to a post on the White House website on May 9, Trump said "we're the piggybank that everybody steals from, including China. We've been paying China $500 billion a year for many, many years."

According to data from the Office of the US Trade Representative, the US goods and services trade deficit with China was $378.6 billion in 2018. Chinese customs statistics showed the US trade deficit with China was $323 billion last year. The figure of $500 billion is quite different from the official figures when it comes to the US trade deficit with China.

What's more, data compiled by FactCheck.org show the US collected more than $10 billion in customs duties on Chinese imports each year from 2010 to 2018. It is unreasonable to say the US has "never taken in 10 cents from China."

Trump may need a fact-check of his remarks before delivering speeches, posting tweets or rolling out policies.

Trump formally launched his re-election campaign with a rally on Tuesday in Florida. The American people need to figure out whether the president will rely on false figures or claims to "Keep America Great."

False claims made by a president can do nothing but affect the image of a country. Trump has more than once accused China of manipulating its currency, but the US Treasury in May again decided not to label China as a currency manipulator. Trump accuses China but doesn't even have the evidence to persuade officials in his government. With the US economy mired in multiple hidden perils amid trade tensions, it is advised that the Trump administration not resort to extreme repression for the sake of winning re-election. The only way out is to get back on track to restore trade ties with China.

My chief concern in this subforum is the blind nationalism and even Han chauvinism (which apparently was not successfully dealt with by Mao) expressed by a number of Chinese people posting here. Ironically, some of the staments I read here are very much in line with the Nationalist China mainlander thinking/behaviour of the mid 20th century. This retrograde mentality breeds irrationality, greatly diminishing the quality of discussions on this forum.

Your post suggest that most, if not all pro-China members have lived in China, and was able to evade Mao's little red book!

Now, why do you supposed that pro-China posters here are from mainland China in the first place!

Typical sterotypical of you!

This whole trade war thing reminds me of "the lead paint in toy" big hoo-ha. It's not the actual risk that matter, it's how big a hoo-ha you make it to be. It has even spread to the F-35.

Every negative narratives about China is designed for their own audiance to soften them up for the future China policy.

Which is why most western peoples view of China is negative. Its kind of strange, when you think China has never invaded any western nation, nor fought any kind of war for over 70 years.

The latest story regarding their beloved F35 is laughable! Complete non-story, but it gave the western MSM another chance to scare, and remind the average Joe public of the big bad China again!

Compare with Trump and white MSM,white racist call China and Chinese or other non white people then thing Chinese Nationalist comments is nothing. You just looking on CNN, CNBC, CBC, BBC, Bloomberg then you will see those Chinese response is not hard enough. When you call Chinese is in mid 20 century then i call all white people still live in Colonialism era.
For me personally i think all white people is biggest hypocrite and illusion people. They think they build this world, they think all people around world is in debt with them. Earth will stop spin if not have white people. They call non white is subhuman peasant, a leech can't live with out white. They think they do favor for their colony when actually is robbing, murder, rape, enslave. If i have red button to launch nuclear ICBM then i will not wait single second to fire to US and Europe.
P/s: don't mind me, i just a crazy litle Vietnamese.

Becareful, the mods wouldn't like this, plus we got our very own big brother on patrol here.

Didn't you say you wanted to get to know Chinese people? What's the matter, you don't like what you see when we are free to speak our minds on the internet? You prefer the Chinese people of your imagination perpetuated by the level of conversation you get to have in the office?

"I don't care about country; I just want to earn money to buy things and live well with my family!"

"Country? I love this country because it's so beautiful and easy to live in!"

"China's got a lot of problems; Chinese people are mean!"

Those empty conversations you had with Chinese people got you thinking we've got no fighting spirit and now you're shocked to find what we really think, eh? Guess what? We have way different conversations when everyone's Chinese.
