Defeat the U.S. containment with the Long March spirit

President Xi Jinping is calling on Chinese citizens to uphold the spirit of the Long March as the country travels down on the path toward national rejuvenation, which is being described by the Chinese leader as a "new Long March."

Xi Jinping made the suggestion during a recent inspection tour in the eastern Chinese province of Jiangxi, the starting point for the grueling expedition in the 1930s by the Chinese Red Army which eventually led to a shift in the balance of power in the country's civil war, and ultimately to the founding of the People's Republic of China.

Many in China are heeding Xi Jinping's goal of a "new Long March" as breaking the containment of Washington in trade, technology, military and people-to-people exchanges, while all-the-while, striving for a new future in China's development.

The Long March of the Red Army is considered by most observers as one of the most important events of the 20th century, as it ultimately influenced the direction China was going to take in the future. The march through the rugged wilderness by dedicated soldiers is a human epic full of ideas and dedication, written with will and courage.

Today, with China being the world's second largest economy, the effects of a "new Long March" will also be far-reaching as the nation adopts the spirit of the original Long March to achieve national rejuvenation.

The challenges being imposed by the United States on China have entered a new phase. Washington appears relentless in its efforts to cripple China's top tech companies while wooing or coercing its allies to take sides, all in an attempt to deter China's technological development.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has become Washington's point man in the crusade, saying that he's been "explaining the risks" to national security associated with Chinese tech firm Huawei as he travels around the world and meets with various government leaders.

Statistics from China's Research Institute for Machinery Industry show that as of May 17, over 260 Chinese companies have been added to the U.S. Entity List, making up around 22 percent of all foreign firms now under U.S. export controls.

The Trump administration's ultimate goal appears clear. It is continuing to impose extreme pressure on Beijing by cutting supplies to Chinese companies and their affiliated foreign firms as a pressure tactic, as U.S.-China trade negotiations have yet to generate any concrete results.

But in making this move, Washington is grossly underestimating China's innovation capability, as well as the Long March spirit embedded in the Chinese people to motivate themselves. Such spirit is not only epitomized in China's space industry, where rockets are named after the Long March, but also in the will of the Chinese people to unite around a national cause.

Faced with external pressure, the people of China have proven through history that they are willing to place national interests above all else. The people of China will not hesitate to make any sacrifice and overcome any obstacle through strength-of-unity in order to achieve the goals of the country.

China's history has helped shape its future.

Nearly 180 years ago, China felt the pain of national humiliation during the First Opium War, through which the people of China drew lessons. The pain of being robbed of national dignity by a foreign power forced the Chinese to look inside themselves to rediscover the pride that comes with the pursuit of national prosperity.

Only a few generations after that setback, China re-emerged on the world stage with the development of its first atomic bomb, hydrogen bomb and artificial satellite.

The reform and opening-up drive over the past four decades have provided the tools, and the spirit, that China needed to become the economic power that it is today.

Pursuing scientific and technological progress, and sharing those achievements is something that all of humanity aspires to. Technology is by no means the exclusive privilege of any one country. Faced with the United States set on creating hegemony over technology, China is once again being called to defend itself, not with guns and bullets, but rather with "zeros and ones."

Only by making technological advancements can Chinese companies like Huawei defend their own interests, and the interests of China.

Over 100 years ago, British interests attempted to press further into China through the lure of an opium pipe. Today, the United States is using a different opiate. This is the false sense of power and prosperity, which nationalism and protectionism claim to provide.

The Chinese people are embarking on a different path the Red Army found itself on more than 80 years ago. The landscape may have changed, but the spirit which drove those Chinese soldiers forward in 1935 can, and will, continue to be found in the Chinese people today.

US must clarify its China approach

The Chinese people are so confused: What on earth does the US want with China? Does it want fair trade or does the US refuse to accept China's development and seek to break the Chinese economy as its ultimate goal?

This is a major issue. For the sake of long-term interests and the well-being of the Chinese and the US people, as well as the world peace, Washington has an obligation to make a serious and sincere answer to the question so as to help Chinese society accurately understand the US intention. Such an understanding will profoundly affect the way Chinese society responds to the US-launched trade war and China's overall attitude toward the US.

Washington rudely tries to use a tariff war to suppress China. US vice president and US secretary of state issued fierce speeches recently. The US is also opposing almost all of China's actions on the international stage and is suppressing Huawei savagely. This behavior makes most Chinese believe the US is against China's development, and the real purpose of the US is to deprive China of its development ability and the so-called fair trade is just an excuse for stealing away interests. In other words, the US wants to rob China of not only its money but also its future.

If Washington turns its jealousy against China's development into all-round containment of the country, and would seek to sacrifice the two peoples' livelihoods and world peace only to tear China down, then this is an evil policy that violates political morality. Under such circumstances, Chinese people will not yield to the US. We will do our best to protect the right of national development and not fear any risk.

We have no idea what Washington will do in the 21st century. We hope the US clarifies its own thoughts and retains its authority, authenticity and effectiveness in responding to China's query.

China's policy toward the US is clear. At least we don't want to make it complicated. China has no will to challenge the US strategically. China's development is for the good life of the people. China has wanted to rid itself of humiliation throughout modern history, which is a strategic psychology of a defensive nature. We sincerely believe China cannot pursue its interests by zero-sum expansion. Expanding cooperation is the only way for China to advance in the world.

China doesn't think it should or is able to vie for world hegemony. We want good China-US relations, and believe that kindness should be the priority of China's diplomacy although there can be conflicts and temporary confrontation. Any risky diplomatic policies will not be supported by the people.

What is the US strategy toward China? The question makes us confused. What does it mean that the US regards China as a strategic rival? Who should be responsible for US actions? There are the US leaders' changing statements, fierce voices against China in the White House and radical claims from the US Congress. To which of these should we pay attention and which should we ignore?

Our general feeling is that the US won't allow China to catch up with it or surpass it. More and more US people believe Washington should contain China at all costs. They are becoming increasingly influential in the US, triggering the US into radical actions against China. As China is fully defensive and has not launched radical countermeasures, the US is becoming increasingly tough and hostile.

In a politically diverse US society, there is no powerful force that opposes extreme policies against China. Although there are criticisms of the trade war, most of them analyzes specific interests. They have no strategic rethinking of how to prevent escalation. US suppression of China is still expanding.

Have the US government and major US political forces made up their mind to escalate toward comprehensive containment of Beijing? Are they even prepared to further accelerate the process? Washington should figure this out and give credible answers to the Chinese and US peoples as well as the entire international society.

If this is not the will of mainstream US society and political elites, Washington should elaborate its real thoughts and carry out in-depth strategic communication with China. In the meantime, the US should resolve the two countries' specific disputes so as to make breakthroughs which are favorable to both sides.

Why sue China? They should sue US for forcing China to buy more from them.

No one can force another to buy more to reduce the deficit. On the other hand it's completely legitimate for them to decide on their own accord to buy less to reduce the deficit.

Whatever unreasonable demands that the bully is demanding, the Chinese needs to inform the world of this situation.
It looks like both Europe and the US bullies are trying to squeeze China. They should really fight each other instead.

Isn't the Trumps recent bailout of $16billion on top of the $14billion already to the famers a government subsidies?!

Isn't this type of subsidies that Trump is accusing China of wrong doing. And demanded China to cease this immediately in his trade negotiation?

Talk about hypocrocy!
