Agreed. This is not the time to get impatient. This bird is going to be facing Rafales. So we better get it right.

Better to buy J-10CE then?

JF-17 is good when compared to early block F-16 and other 4th gens, but it’s only an (comprehensive) upgrade package for legacy platforms.

It’s not so hard for Chengdu to outclass the Rafale when they get to build something from scratch, but there are limits on what you can do with a J-7 as foundation.

IMO the force distribution should be J-10CE to counter Rafale and Su-30MKI, JF-17 and F-16 to handle Mirages and Bison. That way, there will be a full spectrum qualitative advantage to counter India’s full spectrum quantitative advantage.

Chengdu makes the J-20 which is a step above the Rafale.

That is not what was said because when read in conjunction with the subsequent statement. The reference was clearly about the J-10CE. Isn't the J-10 produced by Chengdu also? I did not know that the Chinese was now selling the J-20 to Pakistan?

My point is if they can make a platform like the J-20 it should not be a problem to make something like the Rafale if they wanted to. But I don't think the J-10CE for Pakistan would happen. I'm just hoping that the JF-17 gets the J-10B treatment.

And I don't think the Rafale's would be posted near Pakistan. I think it will be posted near China.

Might as well as go for a stealthy platform if you are willing to burn money.

I don't think we can afford adding the J-10 platform. We can't outspend India, we have to make do with our limited budget. We've put all our eggs into the Thunder and Viper baskets to close off the 4th gen. Now all the money and R&D is going into the 5th gen "Azm" project, as well as building out UAV/UCAV capabilities, which I hope we invest more in, because we're gonna need them to counter the S-400.

But it's not a bad strategy. The Block I & II were basically half-finished products. Sort of like the Alpha and Beta versions of a software launch. We needed to induct them early to build up the logistical and maintenance infrastructure. I think the plan was to have everything ready for the Block III by the time it arrived. We have achieved that. Our pilots also got used to the airframe's capabilities in the meantime, and eventually the older blocks will be upgraded to Block III standard.

As for the Block III versus the Rafale/Flanker, it can be done. It won't be easy, but we've arrived at the point where we can challenge these bogeys given proper tactics.
