Actually, I was monitoring the Chinese side, here is the statement from Ministry of Commerce of the PRC.
And surprisingly it seems the negotiation will continue this Friday in Washington... What a show.

now I read
China deeply regrets U.S. tariff hike, vows countermeasures: Chinese delegation

China "deeply regrets" that the United States has increased additional tariffs on 200 billion U.S. dollars worth of Chinese goods from 10 percent to 25 percent, a Chinese delegation said in a statement here early Friday.

China will have to take necessary countermeasures, said the delegation, which is currently in Washington for the 11th round of China-U.S. high-level economic and trade consultations.

With this round of talks still ongoing, China hopes that the United States can meet China halfway, and that the two sides will make joint efforts to resolve existing problems through cooperation and consultation, the delegation said.

rational and candid? with this administration? ha! considering liu he was apparently asking xi to allow more concessions to the u.s., and thankfully xi shut him down hard, i have to ponder if xi is just using him as a fall guy so that when the talks collapse, xi can scapegoat him. people ready to sign new unequal treaties are plenty deserving of being scapegoated

Scapegoating Liu is unwarranted. Xi allegedly said he would "take responsibility for all possible consequences."

There is no evidence of Liu asking Xi permission for more concessions than were previously implicitly approved by Xi (since Xi had met with Trump quite recently and trade was no doubt discussed). In all likelihood there has genuinely been a strategic shift by Zhongnanhai causing a reversal of the previous conciliatory approach. I wouldn't call the thrown out agreement an unequal treaty, though - any more than China's negotiated entry into the WTO was (where China still came out on top despite succeeding in fulfilling its obligations which held China to quite a double standard from other members, which caused many nationalists to view Zhu Rongji as a traitor). As noted by @Biscuits, the information available to date about it suggests that it was not all one-sided as the Americans had to walk back many of their initial demands, and far from potentially being as crippling as the Plaza Accord.

I anxious as to the outcome of this talk But here he is in live interview vice premier Liu He
Chinese Vice Premier Liu He arrived in Washington on Thursday for the 11th round of high-level economic and trade consultations with the U.S. side. Liu told reporters upon his arrival that he came to Washington with sincerity, saying that under the current special circumstances he hopes to engage in rational and candid exchanges with the U.S. side.

he looks very calm .. unlike Trump ... so nervous and angry :)

What trade war? China stocks jump after tariff hike
  • Chinese shares stood defiant after their return from the lunch break, surging despite the U.S. imposing higher tariffs on Chinese goods.
  • The U.S. raised tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods — from 10% to 25% — at 12:01 a.m. ET Friday.
  • Beijing pledged to take countermeasures but did not provide specifics, Reuters reported.

So what is happening? I can see reasons why China doesn't want to make a deal with the US, and that the US might be in a surprisingly more vulnerable position going onward.

Yes, I was thinking that.
Let's compare and contrast.
Liu serious but measured, adult and objective.
He said "tariffs are bad for CHINA, US and the world" basically a loose loose situation for everyone, and we should work together to avoide that situation.
Very mature, objective and proper behaviour and assessment.
Compare that with Trump.
"I'm Mr Tariff man" "Tariffs are good"
"We are winning" "China is paying".
No win-win message there. Its all us and them, and since we are whiter than white, they must be the bad guys!
Now is this the language of a statesman? Or even a mature adult?

No. It’s language that resonates with his voter base. And speaks to who they are.

Anonymous is also code for they made it up. As Mike Pompeo admitted when working for the CIA that the US lies, cheats, and steals. It goes to show how they're hypocrites... again, where the government isn't suppose to help private businesses as to where they accuse China and yet the US government gets to look out for US companies all the time.

Yes, like Boeing with its dispute with airbus. Harley davidson. Apple. Just to name a few.

US use of other methods to distort the "free market" likr aircraft certification and other standards.

And when all these fails, there's always the favourite. National security card to use.

So much for "free market economy"

Be that as it may. I understand that he is addressing his devotees. (not all the time, mind, as he also express his opinons ad hoc. as well).
BUT, at the end of the day, whoever he address his speech to, it is still his thoughts and attitude, his bullying persona that comes accross as un-statesman!
Also, when you're the president of a country, you do need to dial down the tone of your message, especially in relation with other countried, and certainly NEVER in public, and via twitter!
I don't recall previous statesman ever been so undiplomatic & confrontational.
Still. We live in intetesting times!
