yes, i mean 094. Apparently, according to Sean O'Connor who does satellite photo analysis for Jane's, fifth one was launched in late 2017. Then we had this suggesting another one launched in late 2018. That'd make six overall.

This one in parade should be the fifth one, probably commissioned by now. The one launched in late 2018 is still probably being fitted out and is not yet commissioned.

There have been no credible news concerning 095/096. While 095 does get a lot of rumors, the 096 rumor mill has been much more sparse. Perhaps it all depends on new SLBM as well. If that takes 5 more years to be perfected, then we may not see 096 in a similar timeframe...

A third difference is the hump

As can be seen, the hump extends gradually all the way to the front of the sail.


The 09IV from 2018 has the hump ends at bout 1/3 from the sail.



It also seems to me that the sail in 2019 is longer than 2018, even take into consideration of slightly different angle.

It seems that PLAN has stopped painting pennant numbers on their sub after type 09I (you can google for 09I 405).
Today Chinese subs (SSK, SSGN, SSBN) do not paint pennant numbers (in red below), at least I have never seen. The only way to know (boat-pennant) is internal doc which is secret (I don't have it, nor dare I share it even if I have ). What is open to be seen is the "name" 长征ｘｘ号 in yellow (the following picture) when the sub is being inspected.

For example the "长征１６号"/"pennant number 419" inspected by Xi Jinping last year. It is in the formation this time too.


For an outsider, it is almost impossible to have a count of number of these subs by spotting.

I'm still not sure how do the names and numbers suggest the submarine in question is not 5th 09IV overall. I suggested it might be so, then interstellar said:

in the names. But how exactly do the names and numbers prove anything here? Unless we have a total list of all subs with their exact numbers published somewhere.
