Are the Jamaat al Tawhid tied to the old Tamil Tigers group? I thought the Sri Lankan government had pretty much wiped them out several years ago. I'm just curious.

LTTE was wiped out in 2009.

And No. LTTE was not a religious outfit. Even though religion got dragged in since the Sinhalese were majority Buddhist and Tamils were Majority Hindu, the civil war was an ethnic conflict and had strong root causes some which I witenessed myself especially in 1983. The prime factor was language (Majority Sinhalese, minority Tamils), not religion. In fact, most Sinhala Buddhists are not pure Theravada Buddhists. They are religious hybrids that believe in many Hindu gods. Some even go to church. LTTE attacked Buddhists site since they were a symbol for the Sinhalese, but the LTTE would almost never attack Christian sites (there maybe a handful of occasions).

The blame falls heavily on the president since he is also the Defence and Law Order minister. The blame also falls on the Prime Minister and his government but the main blame goes to the President. President and Prime minister are from 2 different and competing political parties. This political squabble has led to intelligence not being communicated.

Warning signs were there. For example back in January 2019 -

ISIS has taken responsibility. However, IMHO, the biggest blame must go to the government and the president. It is a colossal intelligence failure. The political bickering, partisanship, personal grudges have cost the lives of more than 320 people including 45 children and nearly 40 foreigners. As a Sri Lankan Citizen I will say, 'terrorists do what terrorists do'. It is up to the President and government to ensure the safety of the citizens.

Finally, there are a lot of reports from the local media coming in regarding the intelligence failures and how sophisticated the attack was. They not in English so I can't post them here, plus some are rather disturbing -

There are some serious questions about the sanity of our "President". He has been saying strange things since last years alleged assassination plot. Some even question whether he is fit to hold that office. Unfortunately for Sri Lankans, the primie minister is also a #####. We are screwed how ever you look at it.

Death toll just keeps going up -

Colonel
Is there any truth to Buddhists disguising themselves as Islamic militants in conducting this cowardly act?
If so that would change the narrative going forward.
