RAWALPINDI: The Pakistan Army rejected on Monday rejected Indian claims that a Pakistani F-16 was shot down in an air battle on February 27.

“Reference repeated Indian claims about shooting down of Pakistani F-16 by India and use of F16 in air battle on 27 February. The event of 27 Feb is part of history now. No Pakistani F16 was hit by Indian airforce,” said the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR).

ISPR added that Pakistan Air Force (PAF) strikes across the Line of Control (LoC) were carried out by JF-17 from within Pakistan airspace.

“Later when 2 Indian jets crossed LOC they were shot down by PAF. Whether it was F16 or JF17 which shot down 2 Indian aircrafts is immaterial,” added the statement.

Even if F-16 have been used as at that point in time complete PAF was airborne including F16s, the fact remains that Pakistan Airforce shot down two Indian jets in self-defence. India can assume any type of their choice even F-16."

The ISPR stressed that Pakistan retained the right to use anything and everything in its legitimate self-defence.

Last month, Director General ISPR Major General Asif Ghafoor in an interview with international media categorically rejected Indian claims that Pakistan used US-made F-16 to down Indian aircraft on February 27.

"The aircraft which engaged those targets and fought them were JF-17. As regard to how to use F-16, in what context [they] were used or not — because at that point of time our entire Air Force was airborne — now it remains between Pakistan and the US to see how the MoUs regarding the use of F-16 have been adhered to or otherwise," Maj Gen Ghafoor said in an interview to Russian state-owned news agency Sputnik.

If Pakistan couldn't use their F-16s to protect their own airspace then what good are they for?
I simply don't understand this Indian argument to be honest.

I disagree with the idea that what aircraft shot down the MiG-21 doesn't matter though.

India wants Big brother USA all the time. It's time India with 1.1 billion people and Mukesh Ambani worth $35 billion, takes care of its problems

The whole charade comes down crashing.

Is anyone really surprised by this verdict? The official statements given by the Indian military had been contradictory and inconsistent from the start. What is surprising is the length those people will go to to make up stories and save face.

Indian officials lying is nothing new (witness the "we can spot the J-20" whopper). What truly shocked me was how the "press conference" where India's military leaders announced the airstrikes was conducted. The press was just shouting things out (I assume it was the press, it could have just been random passers-by) at the officials as they were talking. It looked more like a disorderly vegetable market than a press conference.

Maybe the Indian feel more ashamed to be shot down by a JF-17 than a F-16. The Indian doesn't want to recognize that the JF-17 is a capable and effective aircraft which may dwarf its own LCA.

Now that the cat is out of the bag, I suspect that the Indian media may start throwing shade on the JF-17 instead of insisting that their MIG-21 shot down a Falcon.
