Export barriers on the WS-13 has already been lifted for some time. It’s an upgrade for block 2 and onwards, but is expensive, so Pakistan has not bought it.

I think it also has to do with the upgraded version (WS-13E) being readied. Also, I've heard China bought a certain number of RD93s from Russia specifically for the JF17 development. If the PAF switches engines early, those RD93s will end up costing China extra money, as the PLAAF has no use for them otherwise.

Not completely. I think at least one stealth drone (sorry, I forget the designation) was tested with this RD-93.

JF-17's frame life is longer than RD-93's service life, so no worries about RD-93.

PL-15 export barriers have NOT been lifted as far as I know.
How do you know that WS-13 is more expensive than RD-93? What is the %age figure?

Not only is it later made and made to higher specs, but blocks with WS-13 are more expensive than blocks without?

Pretty much common sense. If there was a better system that is equal in cost, why would it not be integrated?

Block II has been a thing since forever. Pakistan received a modified design that omitted powerplant upgrades, but the original models that China keeps for demo purposes (like Paris Airshow) all use the “new” (more like decade old) engine.

The thunder shown in Paris was Pakistan Airforce’s regular aircraft from 26 Black Spider Squadron,not a chinese test protype.
