China's SCS Strategy Thread

NO sensible country would go to war except the war-mongers. Those Veterans who were involved in actual hostilities in the past would realise how disastrous it is to engage in a shooting War. No one wins especially now when countries are nuclear powers. A good example is the recent serious problems between India & Pakistan - both know that they have nuclear bombs in their arsenals & would not hesitate to use them when the need arises. Problem is bravado comments & posturing by leaders & their so called intended actions. We must have PEACE, & China & US & other sensible countries should works towards prosperity & progress for our respective citizens & region. No Trade Wars, No shooting Wars, No antagonistic behaviours by any Military Force or rhetoric by leaders (Political or Military). Settle the matters amicably, & I believe that's what countries of ASEAN plans to do with China. As for the Navies of US & China, let the respective Naval Chiefs settle the issues of FON etc. in a win-win & progressive manner. Use what I call "Thinking Heart" Model - i.e. use BOTH head & heart when discussing & trying to come to amicable arrangements. Using "head" only will lead to clashes. Using "heart" will lead to being bullied. "Thinking Heart" Model - i.e. Think carefully without being inflexible or heartless could be best solution for the parties. The saying goes "Pride goes before a Downfall". The choice is for the Political & Military Leaderships of US & China as both are involved in the continuous rhetoric re: South China Sea.

Hanoi: Chinese ship rams, sinks Vietnamese fishing boat

A Vietnamese fishing boat capsized after being rammed by a Chinese vessel in the South China Sea’s contested Paracel Islands, a Vietnamese official said Friday. China said its boat came upon the fishing vessel after it started sinking and sought help for the crew.

The boat was fishing near

when the incident occurred Wednesday, said the Vietnamese official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the press. The Paracel archipelago is claimed by both Vietnam and China, which

An online report by the newspaper Tuoi Tre said the five crewmen aboard the Vietnamese boat clung to the bow of their upturned vessel for two hours until they were rescued by another Vietnamese fishing boat.

reported that a Chinese government vessel received a distress call from a Vietnamese fishing boat and sailed to the area, where it found the boat partly sunk. The online report, quoting Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang, said the Chinese ship immediately contacted China’s maritime search and rescue center to dispatch a rescue vessel and the five Vietnamese fishermen were rescued.

Lu said nothing about a vessel, Chinese or otherwise, ramming the Vietnamese ship other than to cite the original Vietnamese report. He also didn't specifically say that the Chinese ship rescued the fishermen.

China’s territorial claims extend far into the South China Sea, and it maintains a robust maritime presence that includes driving away non-Chinese fishing boats. Its coast guard performs most such actions, assisted by ships of the maritime militia — ostensibly civilian fishing boats that can swiftly be mobilized. There have been several previously reported incidents of Vietnamese fishing boats being attacked by Chinese vessels.

China has also built up reefs and islands, transforming them into military installations to further its claim to the disputed waterway and its resources, a major point of regional tension. A standoff between the countries in 2014 after China parked an oil rig near the Paracel Islands sparked deadly riots in Vietnam.

Is there no other way for law enforcement to turn back people illegally entering except ramming them? That’s not exactly very civilized of them.

Couldn’t they pluck them up to the coast guard ship, tow their vessel out of China and let them back aboard?

The punishment needs to be in proportion to the “crime” of entering the country illegally. In this case, the punishment should only be to be towed out. Sinking someone’s boat with no compensation is disproportionate and all around a dick move. Private boats can cost millions of dollars.

A Chinese vessel has rescued the five-member crew of a Vietnamese fishing boat that sank in the South China Sea, China's Foreign Ministry said on Thursday, refuting media reports which claimed a Chinese vessel rammed and sank the boat.

Nasty smear from Vietnam then. Who knows what would have happened to the fishermen if the boat sank in Vietnamese, or worse, international waters?

If idiot fishermen sank their own boat through accident/sheer incompetence, they foot the bill, as I doubt many such fisherman have insurance.

But if they claim their boat got sunk by those ‘evil Chinese’, they will get treated like hero’s and the state will probably buy them a new boat.

Such transparent con jobs should be easy to refute, as if they were rammed any sunk by a Chinese ship, their original mayday would have said as such. But I doubt the western media would do such basic due diligence when it comes to stories that paint China in a bad light if they pick this up.

Civilized law enforcement only works within a jurisdiction without any dispute to the law.

Vietnam does not recognize Chinese jurisdiction to the island group. You can not expect the Vietnamese ship to follow the order of Chinese CG without violent resistance. Facing such act, how could you tow them without crushing them? There has been numerous times in other places around the world (not involving China) where CGs machine-gunned fishing ships.

P.S. I suspect those Vietnamese are not ordinary fishermen but rather Vietnamese navy personnel dressed in plain clothes. Remember the incident happened 195 nautical miles to the east of 岘港/Đà Nẵng of Vietnam. It is right inside the island group which is controlled by China. What real fisherman in his right mind would fish in such a location? I can understand a true fisherman fishing in the disputed water, but right next to an island controlled by China? I don't think so.
