Representatives from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) have completed the first flight session of the MC-21-300 certification program, Russia’s Irkut confirmed Wednesday. During the tests, experts evaluated the behavior of the MC-21 in various operational modes, including high angles of attack and stalls. Flight durations ranged from 2.5 to 4 hours and the aircraft flew at altitudes from 10,000 to 32,000 feet.

While an EASA test pilot flew the aircraft, another test pilot, from the Yakovlev Design Bureau, monitored the performance of flight modes. Flight crew also included Russian and EASA flight test engineers to analyze flight parameters. Last September EASA test crews completed a special course in theoretical and practical training to prepare them for flying the MC-21.

As of late last month, two MC-21 prototypes had performed 122 test sorties. Irkut parent United Aircraft expects to finish certification trials in the second half of 2020, enabling first delivery to Aeroflot by the end of that year. Schedules call for first flight of the third prototype to take place imminently, while engineers ready the fourth to join the program in the second quarter of this year. Another specimen for fatigue testing is under assembly, in addition to one already undergoing structural tests at TsAGI. Vendors have begun shipping components for the first production airplane.

The Russian armed forces are launching a large-scale program to upgrade Mi-35M helicopters to Mi-35MV level. They will get new armor, engines and optics to identify and destroy targets at a distance of several kilometers day and night and in any weather. The craft will also get electronic warfare and protection from portable air defense missiles. The upgrade was launched after an analysis of Mi-35M experience in Syria, the Izvestia daily writes.

WATCH Russian Ship Test Weapon That Renders Enemy Targeting Systems Useless..

The Russian TV channel Zvezda has published a video featuring the test "firing" of a Russian weapon for visual and optical warfare, the 5P-42 "Philin" (Russian for "eagle owl"). The system can be used at night and essentially renders enemy targeting systems, night vision equipment and scopes within a 5 km range useless by "blinding" them. It's also capable of blinding and disorienting enemy personnel within a range of 2 kilometres. The system has already been deployed on several Russian ships.

Filin optical disturbance station can blind the adversary at a distance of two kilometers and deny him a chance of precision fire at a warship. Integral Director for quality Vladimir Zharov told the Zvezda broadcaster about the prospective design in the sphere. At present, several models of the blinder are being designed.

Russians Use U.S. Navy’s Aegis Ashore as Excuse to Deploy Strategic Bombers to Crimea

Russian defense officials say they are deploying “squadrons” of Tupolev Tu-22M3 Backfire bombers as a counter to U.S. Navy Aegis Ashore missile defense installations in Poland and Romania, according to a report in Russian state-controlled media on Monday.

, Russian lawmaker Viktor Bondarev said Russia was sending the bombers to the Gvardeyskoye airbase in Crimea in a move to directly counter the U.S. Aegis Ashore missile defense installations.

“The deployment of American missile defense systems in Romania came as a major challenge, in response to which the Russian Defense Ministry made the decision to deploy long-range missile-carrying bombers, Tupolev Tu-22M3s, at the Gvardeyskoye airbase,” Bondarev said. “This move has drastically changed the balance of forces in the region.”

The strategic bombers are capable of carrying nuclear weapons, but it’s unclear if those weapons would come with the bombers if they deployed to Crimea.

The announcement comes shortly after Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the region to celebrate the

A Pentagon spokesperson told USNI News on Monday that U.S. and allied forces were closely monitoring movements on NATO’s eastern flank and “posturing as appropriate” without specifically addressing the claims Russia was moving bombers into Crimea.

Aegis Ashore is based on radar and missile systems found aboard American guided-missile destroyers and cruisers but configured as a ground installation. Each site features an AN/SPY-1D(v) air search radar and a battery of two dozen Standard Missile 3 ballistic missile interceptors. Like the four ballistic missile defense-capable Arleigh Burke-class destroyers stationed at Naval Station Rota, Spain, the sites in Romania and Poland can detect, track, target and launch interceptors to take on a ballistic missile threat. While the Aegis Ashore batteries field SM-3s, they could be outfitted with other weapons.

The forward-deployed destroyers and the two ground installations were part of the Obama Administration’s European Phased Adaptive Approach to missile defense that was designed to interdict small numbers of missiles from countries like Iran.

However, some have said the role of the Aegis Ashore installations could change after the U.S. departed the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces treaty, which Russia formally

Way to confirm Russian worries after the unilateral abandonment of the ABM treaty by the US (which probably precipitated the Russian moves that now killed the INF treaty along with it and created a general atmosphere of mistrust).

No lessons learned.
