Armor of tank is actually a matter of discussion.
The presentation was made a long time ago, but here is a later information in the photo.
I nevertheless translated this with my dear friend's help:
"Protection against penetration and breaking(armor crack i think) exceeds 1000 mm.
Recently, in the program on channel CCTV-13, the domestic main tank 99A, for the first time publicly demonstrated the protective properties of the tank 99A. Its protection makes it possible to resist sub-caliber projectiles with a detachable pallet with tail stabilization (APFSDS maybe, i dunno, because i am russian-speaking guy and most terms in russian and english different) capable of piercing 1000 mm armor. This is the first domestic main tank, whose protective capabilities surpassed the figure of 1 meter. According to information from some sources, it is able to withstand the hit of almost all sub-caliber projectiles with tail stabilization. This proves that the protection of Chinese main tanks has now reached a very high level."
So, i think on presentation they ignored ERA or they saying about different armor zones.

With the Chinese military mounting new weapons and equipment in recent years such as Type 99A tanks and J-20 fighter jets, officers and soldiers were urged to develop new techniques and tactics to integrate with the new weapons systems.

As training began in 2019, an elite- combined arms brigade under the 81st Group Army of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Central Theater Command reflected how they failed to beat its opponent in a 2018 mock battle, despite being equipped with China's strongest main battle tank, the Type 99A, China Central Television (CCTV) reported last week.

Although the mock battle took place in July 2018 at the Zhurihe training base, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, it was the first time that the details of the exercise were revealed.

The Type 99A units are digitalized and interconnected, and are capable of striking enemies even beyond visual range. However, the elite brigade was heavily suppressed during the exercise because of obsolete ways of thinking, the CCTV report said.

"We rushed with the Type 99A too close to the frontline, which did not optimize the use of the tank's combat capability," the report quoted Xu Chengbiao, a battalion commander of the brigade, as saying.

Zhao Jianxin, another battalion commander, said that "We only studied the capabilities of older tanks, but have not completely understood new ones," CCTV reported.

A Beijing-based military expert, who requested anonymity, told the Global Times that weapons alone cannot win wars, as integrating the operator and weapon plays a very important role.

A Henan-based PLA officer, who is familiar with the matter and refused to be named, told the Global Times on Sunday that China has been training more frequently with the Type 99A tank.

China has been mounting new weapons and equipment in recent years. The Type 99A battle tank of the Army, the J-20 stealth fighter jets of the Air Force and the Type 055 guided missile destroyer of the Navy are considered world-class.

As China reportedly continues to develop weapons like stealth bombers, rail guns and aircraft carriers with an electromagnetic catapult, PLA soldiers need to pay extra attention to maximizing them, the Beijing-based expert said.

sums it all up. You can have the best equipment money can buy but without proper training, tactics and maximizing it's full potential it's basicially useless.
A current example of this type of ineffectiveness are the Saudis having an extremely difficult time routing out the Houthis.. Their brand spanking new M1A2s are no match for sandal wearing Houthies armed with rusted AKs and old RPGs.

Keep in mind many of these exercises are done under heavy EW suppression. The “own” side is usually fighting at absolute worst case scenario and the “enemy” side is using a more/entirely complete kit. That way they’re prepared for the worst.

It's not just under heavy EW suppression.

Remember the exercises where the Red army force had to face a Blue army force that had complete air superiority and also tactical nuclear weapons on demand?

But that is the whole point of an exercise. To learn from the failures.

I think it definitely helps that the military, being a directly subordinate branch, does not have the same issues of appeasement as most other nations'.

Imagine for example an USN exercise where the carrier and it's escort are bombarded by anti ship ballistic missiles the moment the battle starts, with a red battlegroup of (simulated) 055s and 052Ds closing in for the kill with supersonic missiles. That would be heresy to the USN command, and it isn't even a worst case scenario. Even an exercise where simulated Iranian speedboats with far inferior armament did a number on a carrier group were quickly revised to script victory for the blue force.

This inability to confront worst case scenarios is a chronic symptom for almost all military forces. Usually, the "friendly" side is invariably made up of higher ranking officers and troops, such as the commander of a carrier who will be captain or higher rank. The "enemy" side would not dare to humiliate them because it would hurt their own prospects at promotion. It is also politically inconvenient to suggest the force is anything but the best, since that may lead to budget investigations.
