That's an imprecise translation and not what was strictly said.

Here is a verbatim translation:

The reporter asks, "Is it possible in the future to equip J-20 with J-10B's (thrust-vectoring) engine, and if so, what kind of performance improvement will the J-20 have as a result?"

Mr. Yang Wei jokingly said, "I'll answer the first part of your question. You asked if it's possible to install the engine (on the J-20) in the future, but how do you know this hasn't already been done?"

End translation.

Given the light-hearted context and Mr. Yang's facetiousness (with a mic drop to boot), it's entirely possible he was simply having a bit of fun at the reporter's expense. I don't think Mr. Yang gave away anything.

The question is is he corroborating that cartoon we saw in April? Or is he aware of its existence and is just yanking our chain.

Could be both. Strictly speaking, his answer was actually a non-answer, or rather, a no-comment done in a way to elicit some laughter. Optimists might interpret it as a confirmation, and they are free to do so. I'm an optimist myself, but I'm also a cautious pedant.

I think we now have a full picture of how the J-20's vortex generation system works. From the looks of it the vortex generators work in stages, with each stage progressing at a greater AoA. The first stage is the vortices formed by the LERXes. The second is the vortices formed from the LERXes in conjunction with those formed by the dogtooth created from the leading edge slats dropping. The third is the first two strengthened by the camber of the LERXes in conjunction with the canard downwash. The last is all prior three plus vortical flow formed over the centerline fuselage from the fore body camber over the inlets. The first three work together to form an ever expanding low pressure zone over the wings that gradually encompasses their whole area, while the last one forms a lower pressure area that encompasses the whole top side of the plane including the centerline fuselage and, from the looks of it at least, the canards.

Outstanding my boy, the SDF "post of the Day!" wonder how our old Buddy the Engineer is, or should I say, where is he? he'd love this? (prolly want to argue with us?), what I really wonder is what he thinks about the J-10s OVT??

If we didn’t already have some evidence independent of the interview I’d probably have concluded he was just having a bit of fun.

Maneuvering with TVC bleeds energy. Maybe only tested in some prototypes, it is doubtful that J-20 would be equipped with TVC, until WS-15 is ready.

But we know since 2017 that 2021 already uses TVC engines ? why the surprise ?
No, we *think* there’s one 201X or 210X with one AL-31 and one WS-10 with TVC undergoing testing right now, based on cartoons from someone who has proven to be a reliable source in previous instances. We do not yet have visual confirmation of that fact.
