As I have mentioned several times, none of the submarines we have seen so far is 09IIIB.

Sorry for the late & abrupt reply to this post, but could the following boat actually be one of the true 09IIIB units? Its distinctive "hump" is unlike that of any other 09III submarines so far. There is also a model of the same boat supposedly from 719 Institute.

Finally, one last thought: could the newest 09IIIB be the same class as the 09V?

Possible and Probable.

This has happened before. 039B (Yuan class) was commonly regarded as 040 by outsiders because of its distinct (drastic) shape change from the first 039 (Song class) and internal change (AIP). But still, PLAN calls it just a variant of 039 class. What outsiders thinks qualifying a new class is not necessarily what PLA thinks. At the end, it is PLA designation matters, it is their boat not ours. The so called 09V could follow the same logic. We may never be able to see 09V because we are already seeing it.:D

That would be a most disappointing outcome. Most PLAN watchers expect the 095 to be up to current or even anticipated world standards, such as IEP, shrouded screws, and possibly even rim drive. A large bow active/passive array could also be included in the list of expectations.

Not impossible. I've wondered for a while if any of the many 09III variants we've seen this year might actually be 09IIIB.

On what basis would we speculate that on?
