ASML optimistic about litho equipment demand in China

Wu Yexing, Taipei; Willis Ke, DIGITIMES

 Tuesday 18 September 2018

Lithography tool vendor ASML is optimistic about increases in demand from China's chipmaking industry, and believes it will land orders for extreme ultraviolet (EUV) litho equipment from China customers looking to make advanced 7nm chips, according to Shen Po, president of ASML China.

The optimism comes despite the fact that United Microelectronics (UMC) has devoted more to mature processes, and Globalfoundries has put on hold its 7nm development.

Shen dismissed speculations that ASML has been prohibited from shipping litho equipment to China in accordance with the Wassenaar Arrangement on Export Controls for Conventional Arms and Dual-Use Good and Technologies. Shen said the firm has been selling litho equipment in the China market. He revealed that ASML's most advanced immersion litho machine NEXT:2000i will be available in China soon.

Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC) has ordered one set of EUV litho machine in 2018, slated for delivery in early 2019 to support its 7nm process development, according to industry sources.

Yangtze Memory Technology and Hua Hong Semiconductor have also ordered ASML 193nm immersion DUV (deep ultraviolet) litho machines to support storage chip fabrication and wafer foundry, respectively, the sources said.

China is emerging as a major export outlet for ASML litho machines, contributing 20% of revenues to the company, with the ratio higher than that contributed by the Taiwan market and similar to that of the US market, according to the company's financial reports for the first and second quarters of 2018.

Shen noted that ASML is moving at full throttles to turn out 20 EUV machines in 2018, which will be increased to 30 units in 2019 and 40 in 2020 to meet increasing demand for such machines in China and other markets.

Having developed a solid presence in the China market following 18 years of efforts, ASML will continue to introduce lithography technology into China and build a sound customer service network in the country. It has set up a training center in Shanghai, China in cooperation with an IC research and development center there to help foster litho talent, according to Shen.

I

China has had some successes in the machine tool industry. Like for example when they bought KUKA in Germany (a deal which I'm still unsure how the Germans even allowed to pass). Can you even remember the name of a single heavy construction machine vendor from China? Because I sure can't. Let alone precision machine tools.

China has had successes in the solar cell and battery cell markets but the semiconductor market will be a lot tougher to crack.

China is evaluating the impact of the United States' decision to impose additional tariffs on 200 billion U.S. dollars worth of Chinese products, the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said on Thursday.

"As we can see so far, the products involve six categories, including electromechanical, light industry, textiles and garments, resources and chemical products, agricultural products and pharmaceutical products, and foreign enterprises are likely to account for almost half of the affected enterprises," MOC spokesman Gao Feng told a news conference.

The unilateral trade protectionist measures of the U.S. hurt not only the interests of enterprises and consumers of both China and the U.S. but also the security of the global industrial chain and supply chain, said Gao.

Gao said China is currently working on targeted measures and will release and implement the measures at an appropriate time to help Chinese and foreign enterprises in China cope with possible difficulties and challenges.

In response to questions that some exporters have shifted focus into the domestic market, Gao said some foreign trade enterprises, including foreign-funded enterprise, had explored the domestic market in China due to its size and high consumption potential.

This are agricultural / building industry machines, and they are not certified even by the US/EU emission norms and standards .

And these are not CNC manufacturing machines or production lines.

China should be looking at a future where there's no trade with the US regardless.
China never needed the USA pr Europe.

There is bigger population than the above together, so all that it takes is to organise it based on Chinese values.

I never understand ed why they needed all that trade thingies in first place.

China is a 1.3 billion country ,if they doing nothing else just implementing legal stuff in the level of the 17. century Dutch legal system they would catch up in no time without trade to the US .

Seriously, what is so special in that 600 million US/European ? Why China needed them in the past forty years at all ?

There's 512 million people living in EU. And further 325 million people living in USA. And those people, on average, have much more money to spend than entire South America (420 million people) or Africa (1225 million people), for example. Entire Africa has nominal GDP of $2.19 trillion. Entire S. America has GDP of $3.94 trillion. EU is little over $17 trillion. US is little over $19 trillion. So average american can spend a lot more than an average African. Which is why US and EU markets are of utmost importance for ANY country in the world. Be it China, US or EU. Perhaps one miiiight do okay without severe presence decline in one of them. But not both.

The average money left to spend is even worse for poor countries than if one just took the GDP figure and divided it with GDP. Once the minimum money needed for basic sustenance is taken, what's left is even less for Africans than it is for US or EU. So in matters of external market to be tapped, US and EU don't just represent 45% of the world's market (as GDP ratio would suggest) but more, probably in the 50-60% range.

China should be looking at a future where there's no trade with the US regardless. That's the way to negate people like Trump. Trump attacks the US's closest allies. You think Trump can rally the world to embargo China into his cause? And for what reason? Because they don't want China advancing in technology and wants it to commit to that in writing where they can punish China if it dares to commit the crime of advancing? That's why trade is being used as a front. If it were really about fair trade why not just engineer trade to be so-called equal instead of this dance with tariffs. No need for negotiation. No, Trump is threatening it all. Trump want something beyond trade.

I'll let you in on a secret... The US can't leave China alone. China has its own economic ecology of over a billion people that they don't control. So do not think they can get the world to ignore China like it were a small banana republic. Just look at Hollywood as an example. They keep threatening to leave China because of what they think is unfair treatment in China. Well why don't they? Get out! It's not like Chinese movies compete with them internationally. They hold a monopoly on world markets yet they still want in. Simply, they can't make money if they're not in China. Look at Google and how they thought they were bigger than China to then take on China in thinking somehow it's a greater loss to China if they weren't there. Google set the stage for every corporation in the world not to mess with China. And now Google is seeking a way back in. Google is big without China and yet they still want in. All these successful entities without China means it goes beyond money. It's also about power. You even see today how the US government is questioning the power these types of companies have because they can sway elections. The US is no different from these corporations so don't be manipulated by talk of how the US is doing better than China and that's how they'll get everything they want from China. Just like they think China will always need them and the US turning its back on China will result in upheavals and a revolution in their favor. Yeah the Chinese don't start a revolution because their human rights are being violated by their own government but they'll start one if they think Beijing is at fault for losing the love of the US... They need China because they know it exists. That's why China will always have that card. They will always want in.

I think that at the end of the day, it just boils down to how China is now perceived as a real rival to the USA.

I always thought this was going to happen eventually. Most of the top decision makers in the USA are completely wedded to the idea of US global supremacy and hegemony, whether that be in the realm of the military, economics, technology, political leadership, etc etc

So they were never going to be comfortable with China becoming number 1 and relegating the USA to number 2 position.

If China continues to focus on internal economic development, then it should be able to grow to twice the size of the US economy in PPP terms around 2030. And it should also be a hi-tech economy, given exceptionally high levels of R&D spending (2.1% of GDP) for what is still a middle-income country.

It is the lure of that huge market and the threat of homegrown Chinese technology multi-nationals that means foreign companies can't afford to ignore China.

They even has factory in US Georgia here it is
The SANY America headquarters is in Peachtree City, Georgia. It has 340,000 square feet of manufacturing space and 60,000 square feet of office space. Hydraulic excavators are assembled at the facility, which has the capacity to produce more than 2,000 units per year. The first excavator rolled off the production line in February of 2012.
Now this 2016 The become the largest front loader manufacturer this year
Sany Group is China’s largest and the world’s fifth largest construction machine manufacturer. It is especially well known for its concrete machinery, for which it is globally ranked number one.

If you want to know China is the biggest CNC manufacturer follow by Germany The irony is that US CNC is now withered due to embargo to China

Her is CNC show in china

  • As the world's largest machine tool market, China achieved machine tool sales of RMB199.6 billionin 2016, a figure on a par with the last year. However, the penetration of CNC machine tools remained low, only 25.7% in 2016, a huge gap compared with 60%-70% in developed countries.

    China manufactured 282,900 CNC machine tools in 2016, a 5.7% rise from a year earlier, including 63,791 CNC lathes (up 3.9% YoY), 37,698 machining center (up 8.8% YoY) and 1,391 CNC grinders (down 1.6% YoY).

    Major Chinese CNC machine tool manufacturers include Dalian Machine Tool Group, Shenyang Machine Tool (Group), JIER Machine Tool Group, Jiangsu Yawei Machine-Tool, Ningbo Haitian Precision Machinery, Qinchuan Machine Tool & Tool Group and Wuhan Huazhong Numerical Control. Due to Shenyang Machine Tool (Group)'s years of losses and Dalian Machine Tool Group's bond defaults, the market concentration slipped critically with top5 enterprises holding a combined 30% market share in 2016.

    Geographically, Northeast China and East China are main production bases for CNC metal-cutting machine tools (CNC lathe, machining center), while the Yangtze River Delta region is the major production base for CNC grinder and functional parts (ball screw and linear guideway). East China and Northeast China together seized about 73.6% of CNC metal-cutting machine tool market in 2016, compared with an 88% share for Central China and East China in CNC metal–forming machine tool market.

    CNC machine tool technology will move towards two directions in China:

    1. New complex machining tools like turn-milling & mill-turning machine tool, turning-grinding center, gear machining machine tool, turn-milling and 5-axle linkage machine tool continue to spring up; the trend of complex machining becomes more obvious as heavy machine tools are added with multifunctional attachments and rotary table.

    2. As power electronics and CNC technology advance and the parts like linear motor, torque motor, motorized spindle and grating calibration become more mature, the direct-drive technology finds application in CNC machine tool at a faster speed, greatly promoting changes in the structure of and improvement in performance of CNC machine tools.

    Global and China CNC Machine Tool Industry Report, 2017-2021 highlights the followings:
    Global and Chinese machine tool market (size, supply & demand, import & export, competitive landscape);
    CNC machine tool markets (size, supply & demand, import & export) in major countries;
    CNC machine tool in China (development environment, supply & demand, competitive landscape, development trends, etc.);
    Machine tool segments in China (CNC lathe, CNC grinder, machining center);
    Upstream (numerical control system, servo system) and downstream (automobile, aviation, rail transit equipment, electronic information) sectors of CNC machine tool industry in China;
    12 foreign and 19 Chinese CNC machine tool manufacturers (operation, CNC machine tool business).

Massive SANY factory in USA
n the small city of Peachtree City, Georgia, sits the 5th largest construction equipment manufacture in the world, Sany. Sany Group was founded in 1986 by 4 people and has expanded to 90,000 employees worldwide. Since 2011 Sany America, a branch of Sany Group, has been located in Peachtree City, Georgia.

The factory sits on 228 acres, and the building is 400,000 square feet. Sany America is kind enough to open its doors and give Rick Newman, owner of Newman Tractor, a tour of the factory. Newman Tractor recently became a dealer for Sany Excavators and has added over 30 of the excavators to their rental fleet in 2015. “We believe in the Sany line of product,” expresses Rick. Newman Tractor will be exclusively renting Sany Excavators in the years to come.

“All of the excavators come standard with auxiliary hydraulics. The larger machines come with rotec function and quick coupler function.” Every excavator has a 3 year/3,000 hour standard manufacturing warranty. Rick says, “Sany support has been great.” Rick continues, “Anything Newman Tractor may need, Sany responds quickly. And if need be, company representatives will come to his aid, at Newman Tractor headquarters in Kentucky or the branch in Florida.” A big thanks to Sany America, Kevin Grover, and Alex Baksay for taking such good care of us. * Call Newman Tractor: 859-888-1388
