Length is only a partial improvement. And the last step before seeking a larger calibre.
Thanks to improvements in recoil management we are today at a point where larger guns like the 120 Or 125 mm smooth bore can be fitted into tanks of this weight class with less issues.

So what? After shattering, the sabot pieces no longer possess the perfect combination of speed, mass, and shape to penetrate even the thin top armour. It'll scratch the paint, sure, but no one cares about paint in wartime.

Apologies I'f I misunderstand .. or what you put was simply a Typo .. 'the sabot pieces ...?' the sabot is discarded/shed as the projectile leaves the barrel. If pieces of the sabot strike the target , something has gone seriously wrong, or your target is way too close .... lol

Jobjed refers to the penetrator rod which is often abbreviated as a ‘sabot round’ he is not referring to the petals of the discarded sabot. At such high energies, densities and hardness of both armour and the penetrator, i.e hardened steel, tungsten, DU, ceramics etc, if the penetrator does not acheive a clean penetration, it will simply shatter due to the forces exerted onto it by the armour. Hence why sabot rounds don’t often ricochet, but shatter if the armour puts up too much resistance.

I guessed that was the case .. and was asking the question pretty much tongue in cheek. Am more used to hearing the penetrator rod referred to as the the penetrator or the core, but thanks anyway.

The quality is rather lower than the originally shared photo, just look at how grainy it is, not to mention the 'censored' parts are some haze and distant hills. Big deal.
