Within the next 5 to 10years both the Kongo class and Murasame class will be retrofitted to become training vessels with construction of probably larger vessels to take their place in the fleet.
With those capital vessels 150kW class solid state lasers for CIWS may be placed into service.

The Japan Marine United Corporation has launched the first of two new improved Atago destroyers for the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) at its shipyard in Yokohama.

Launched in a ceremony on July 30, the lead destroyer was named Maya – after a mountain in Kobe and a WWII heavy cruiser – and will be the namesake of what is currently a class of two Aegis-equipped, 8,200-ton destroyers.

Maya (DDG-179) is scheduled to be commissioned in 2020 after undergoing further outfitting and trials.

The 170-meter Maya-class (also known as 27DDG-class) ships will be equipped with the Aegis Baseline 9/Ballistic Missile Defense 5.1 variant, referred to as

.

Powered by two combined gas turbine-electric and gas turbine (COGLAG) engines, the ship and 300 crew are propelled to a maximum stated speed of 30 knots.

Maya-class destroyers will field the SM-3 Block IIA missiles, for interception of short- and intermediate-range ballistic missiles, and will be capable of launching SM-6 anti-air missiles.

Awesome Jeff, wish you were here, I've got some burgers on the Bar BQ! LOL
I wish I coud be there grubbin down with you guys. I was driving home at about 5:30 M here and it was 104 degrees. Hot day out!

But these new Japanese ships are pretty solid. This will make eight AEGIS destroyers, and then they have anothher 6 of their own AEGIS-like vessels too. So they are doing their part.

The Aussies will ahev the three AEGIS DDGs, and then 13 AEGIS-like FFGs that are going to be large frigates...and ding their part. South Korea the same. They will have six of the largest AEGIS DDGS ultimately. Building their second set of three nnow. When you add those three nations up, you end up with clos to 40 AEGIS vessels...outside of the fifty the US will have in the Pacific before all is sad and done.
