Annoyed at the constant stream of news articles

solarz...if a member is annoying you all you have to do is Just click on your user name on the top right of any page scroll down and select people you ignore. Fill in the blanks. Simple.

Pop, I'm well aware of that, but in this case, it would not solve my problem.

To reiterate, I use the "New Posts" button to look for threads that have been updated since my last visit. Normally, if I see a thread that interests me, I would click on it and see what's new.

However, because a poster continuously posts news articles without any content of their own, the "New Posts" page is filled with threads that are last updated by this user. 90% of the time, if I click on one of those threads, I will just see a news article from that user, and nothing else. I am tired of having to click through 9 threads just to see one that contains some discussion.

Your suggestion would not help this because all it would do is replace that poster's username with "ignored user", with no other change in behavior. It would not, for example, show me that some other user has posted in that thread.

Thanks for the response!

My intention was not to request moderator intervention, but to rather raise awareness about the issue and hopefully come to an understanding with my fellow forumites.

My opinion is that we should keep the news in the news threads as much as possible. If you post an article in a non-news thread, please accompany it with some comments that can promote discussion. Please do not just post an article and say nothing about it. On the same vein, please do not quote someone and then say nothing.

Could you anyway send me a PM or start a conversation ... like I said I just cannot start one and I would like to solve that issue but currently family issues are a priority.

Best,
Deino

Well solarz I've no idea what to tell you. None. the member you are referring to is not violating any forum rules that I'm aware of.

Perhaps the forum can establish a News sub-forum under Members club room? Just an idea. And all news should be posted there.

It seems to me a rule is being violated:
[Do not] "Post any article by someone else without comments of the poster and a link to it. You are responsible of the content of your links so do not post trash."

Very often I see "Now I read...". Yes there is a link, but "now I read" does not qualify as a "comment". The poster is not giving their opinion, in this case.

There used to be a rule against double posting, and I now see it's gone. But today I see "the culprit" (and also some other people) post the same news in several threads. The matter of the railgun comes to mind, which seemed to appear everywhere. I guess it's not against the rules anymore, but it's annoying, so I agree with Solarz. Maybe this rule should go back in, of course excepting the general news threads.

P.S.: I'm not suggesting anyone be punished, just that the existing rule about posting articles w/out comment should be followed.

I will talk about another thing that annoys me. The information flow out of China is seriously lacking these days. That's why I don't post as much as I use to do. What happened to all those wall climbers ? And its not just the wall climbers but the media in China no longer reports on new military commissionings as they use to do. They commissioned 2 Type 052D this year without any media coverage! I know there is nothing we can do about it. And this maybe off topic but I just want to rant about it.

Didn't they pass a law to prosecute military watchers a while back? I remember hearing speculation that this might have a dampening effects on China's military watchers. Sounds the prediction is coming true.

This is an interesting one.
I have sympathy, but not necessarily agreement with the complaint.

Sino-defence is a specialist forum and part of the appeal of a specialist forum should be not only, the stimulating and inciteful (sorry insightful) debate, but also access to specific and high quality reference material, especially in the matter of locating and publicising rare content sites, that would otherwise be difficult to find.
I short, a forum such as this should be an information access portal, as much as a debating forum.

There are however always potential issues, too much waffle and pointless back and forth, going off topic etc is just as disruptive to the flow of meaningful debate, as is the inclusion of large numbers of articles and papers etc.

My suggestion for a solution is to have more subject dedicated news (I prefer to say Library) threads which can be browsed quietly without conversation in between and then dedicated discussion threads. I know we have news threads already, but I am thinking of Library threads which are far more subject specific and which can mirror particular discussion threads. This should really be for the long mega threads that we have on specific platforms or International crisis etc.

I think this would help the flow and make linking/ref to articles posted to the forum easier.
Whether or not it would be possible or desirable to exclude Library threads from the new post menu, I really do not know. Possible worth Admin having a look perhaps?
