Do you know what this is exactly what I thought ??

But what are the chances that Huitong would get it wrong ? So I went with what he said

That is definitely 33075!

30075

Do Chinese find the number 4 bad luck ? If not 30074 should exist

Which means we have identified 5 units for PLAN

In MahJong 4 signifies death. I know a Chinese friend, whose car was being registered in 2004 in UK. Number plate started with 54. He said "No way am I going to have a 54 Plate Car, where 54means 5X4 times chances of death". He went out and bought a personalized Number plate.

The PLA doesn't believe such superstitious beliefs. Also four only sounds like death in Cantonese, which is spoken by like 5% of the population. Official language is mandarin, so no official cares about 4.

To admit I've heard about that too but I think it is often a very much over-exaggerated story ... and if it would be true, then the PLAAF would surely never ever established a 54th Brigade?

Number 4 only sounds like death in Cantonese. Traditionally in China, number 4 actually means fortune. In fact, any even number means well in ancient China. The Chinese symbol for wedding is a square composed of 4 Chinese character of “luck”. One dish that must be served at any Chinese wedding is “4 happy meatballs”.

I some times got very frustrated when being asked something like "why don't you eat rice?", as if every Chinese eat rice, like number "8", or bamboo décor is typical Chinese etc. etc. And I don't know who to blame, and have to patiently (which I lack) explain.

Just some counter samples of PLA not being superstitious of number "4".

  1. The National Army 4th corps (the iron corps) during the ROC era, which is led by the Communist and later became the funding core of PLA.
  2. The early (1930s) 4th front army of Red Army, after CCP breaking rank with the ROC government.
  3. The Communist "New 4th Army" during the Sino-Japanese war under the ROC banner. Again a funding core of PLA.
  4. The 4th field army during the civil war before 1949, lead by field marshal Lin Biao. One of the most prestigious field army at the time.
  5. The 54th corps (later Group Army) of PLA from 1949.
The CCP (and PLA as its part) is atheist. Any superstitious belief is fundamentally against CCP. An individual within the organization may be less atheist, but showing that outwardly is going to get himself re-educated, especially after Xi get in the office. One of the many things I like him of.

Reformed into 83rd GA recently. However, your point still stands with the 74th GA, a reformed 42nd GA, as well as the former 14th, now incorporated into the new 75th GA.
Yano how the number 2014 was missing in the J-20’s pre-production prototypes? Pretty sure that was because 2014 was a static test frame. If this was actually the case it’s at least a sign of a tongue in cheek poke at common superstitions.

ok guys, thanks for your comments but can we come back to the topic and esp. this question:

However given a reply at the CDF the number on the tail looks more like 33075.

Well ... that's indeed another surprise? Does anyone have this image in full-size?

View attachment 46101

So is it 30075 or 33075?? That's the question... :)
