Ok so we can agree on this

CV-16 is 001
CV-17 is 001A for whatever reason (A is next iteration I guess)
CV-18 is 002

What's 003?

Why? The sign just says 002 Carrier Project "Two Total" System Working Conference. Nothing indicates what 002 is referring to.

The story is about (the process and quality of) outfitting of CV17 and they call it 002 officially. This should be treated as the fact now, that what people call 001A is internally known as 002.

What is uncertain is then what is 003, was it #3 from Ma's lecture, or something else. Other info points to the possibility that 003 is the 80k-90k ton, nuclear powered, EMALS carrier.

this if I am not mistaken means CV17 (the one just launched a few months ago) is called 002 internally

Not surprising if they called their second carrier project 002. Calling the second carrier project 001A make it sound like just an extension of the first carrier project which kind of decrease its importance especially since it's China's first aircraft carrier that is built from scratch (Second overall).

Makes no differences, only about a name. That is why the changes is only related to the titles of these threads. Nobody really knows what the next carrier is until it is launched.

It probably means something to the people actually building the second aircraft carrier, from scratch. They would rather call it 002 rather than 001A which implicitly mean the project is still part of the first aircraft carrier project.

001 is a design project number. CV-17 is clearly close to being a copy of Kuznetsov derived 001 design, hence 001A. It seems unlikely to me that the 002 design following 001A would be a one off design. There is advantage to two similar ships operating in pairs. Most likely 002 would consist of at least a pair of hulls, so CV-18 and CV-19 will either both be built to the 002 design, or one is 002, the second slightly improved 002A.

Unlike the US, whose basic carrier design was stabilized by late 1960s, following trial and error through bringing 4 incrementally improving post war carrier classes to services, thus facilitating a 11 ship run of very similar design (1JFK fossil fuel class, and 10 otherwise almost identical nuclear Nimitz class), the Chinese carrier design will likely need several more incremental classes before settling down on definitive design, so I expect 003 will be the new design for CV-20, following 2 002 hulls.

We just found out that it is about project "002". So everybody really knows.

All the recent news are saying 002 is the official designation for the new ski jump carrier currently in the water. It is expected to start sea trial some time next year.

What the other brand new carrier being built by Jiangnan will be called is unknown. It will be launched 2020 - 2025. 003 would be a good guess but is not officially confirmed.
