News on China's scientific and technological development.

It's a free country and you may hold and express publicly any opinion you wish. Incidentally, that's something you can't get in the People's Republic of China, so I understand why you wouldn't want to go back.
Absurd assertion. When have you ever seen a post from Equation or myself that you believe we would get in trouble for had we expressed them in China? I have no idea why you have this misconception but there any many people making all sorts of complaints, expressing all sorts of ideas in China. But if they expand and threaten to cause unrest, that's when they pay big time. Basically the same in the US. You are free to express any idea and protest but if your protest becomes effective like in Standing Rock, you will be met with force.

But that's a technicality, not a reality and the world works in realities. If you're Asian and you lived here for 4 generations, you're still considered foreign because you look foreign. If you're white and you speak good English, you can be American right off the flight. That's the reality because people judge other people for similarity to themselves and the visual aspect is huge.
You're so far off base it's not funny. There are certainly some Americans that behaves as you said, but the majority behave like that. When it comes to accepting peoples from all over the world, America is as good as any large country. Ewww, but there's *gasp* RACISM in the US. Yes, there is, and that will probably never end. But, the American society legally reject racism in all its forms, and most Americans treat different races with decency and respect. Perfect? No. Better than most? Yes.

Ignoring a large problem such as racism won't erase it. It will only makes America worse.

No it isn't. That "free country" has been a cliche for decades. Especially when it ran by special interest groups and lobbyist. Self expression has been done by China and many other ancient civilizations before so it's nothing new.
Okay Equation, I get it. You don't see America as a free country. I think you're wrong, but it's your God given right to publicly express your social and political opinions. Would you at least admit that isn't the case in the People's Republic of China?

On balance, Americans don't ignore racism, evidence show quite the opposite. That's why America is by far the best country in the world. No other even comes close.

Why do you need me to see America as a free country or not? Or the PRC for that matter? You are too desperate to paint America as the brightest country in the world, therefore except from being fallen by it's own sword. Oh by the way there is no God in my opinion, but that doesn't mean I'm prejudice against those that follow such spiritual cult.

Ah, but I'm the one who's getting deep into the truth and it's uncomfortable. I like how you used the word "accept" when you used it to describe America's attitude to other people. I would have liked it more if you used another common word, which is "tolerate." Neither word carries the connotation of "embrace." Americans can "accept" foreigners like you have to accept it when a customer pays for $30 in groceries in nickels; you will tolerate that behavior because legally, you must. They made LAWS to protect you form being discriminated against! Why? Because without them, people would chew you up. They have to use laws to stop the people here from from doing unacceptable things to you because they know that it's in their nature to want to discriminate against those who are not like themselves. Are there laws in China to protect Chinese people from being discriminated against? No. Because people don't do that anyway.

Maybe for some/you, it's ok to be superficially respected and tolerated (by most) while leaning on legal protection in the rarer instances, but for others, we will not accept that. We know that for our contributions, we deserve to be embraced and lauded as champions of our society. That comes only in our motherland.

Tell me something, what would happen to you if you hold up a sign in a public square lamenting the massacring of demonstrators on a certain day, in a certain Beijing place in 1989? What would happen to you if you went on the Chinese Internet and say something to the effect anyone interested in protesting for democratic elections come to X point and we'll march (peacefully) to city hall and demand our rights?

My guess is we wouldn't hear from you for a while, because you'll be in jail with a bleak future.

High-efficiency multiphoton boson sampling

Boson sampling is considered as a strong candidate to demonstrate ‘quantum computational supremacy’ over classical computers. However, previous proof-of-principle experiments suffered from small photon number and low sampling rates owing to the inefficiencies of the single-photon sources and multiport optical interferometers. Here, we develop two central components for high-performance boson sampling: robust multiphoton interferometers with 99% transmission rate and actively demultiplexed single-photon sources based on a quantum dot–micropillar with simultaneously high efficiency, purity and indistinguishability. We implement and validate three-, four- and five-photon boson sampling, and achieve sampling rates of 4.96 kHz, 151 Hz and 4 Hz, respectively, which are over 24,000 times faster than previous experiments. Our architecture can be scaled up for a larger number of photons and with higher sampling rates to compete with classical computers, and might provide experimental evidence against the extended Church–Turing thesis.

Oh, then I'll go to jail and I deserve to be there for trying to subvert power from the most competent government in the world (your words), which is treason. But I don't do that and I don't like to cause trouble just like most Chinese people so we have nothing to be worried about in China. (I don't know a single person who has a desire to do that either.) People who want to engage in those trouble-causing activities should absolutely stay away from China. I'm not one of them. So I feel very free there.

Let me be clear: People who want to work hard and contribute to technological advancement should go to China. It is super free and super welcoming for them. People who graduate with "degrees" in human rights and work for NGOs complaining and causing trouble should stay away from China. It is incredibly oppressive to people who contribute nothing but cause trouble. I, just like you, also understand why someone like that would not want to go to China. (But sadly, sometimes they do and the CCP has to expend resources to arrest them. If they were decent humans, they would have been honest on their Visa applications and saved everyone the ordeal.)
