Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor pier gets OK to grow to accommodate subs

BANGOR, Wash. — Congress recently allocated $73 million to lengthen a service pier at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor so two Seawolf-class submarines can be moved from Bremerton.

USS Seawolf and USS Connecticut will join their only sibling, USS Jimmy Carter

The project and a land-water interface had been combined in one environmental impact study. The interface, which will connect a floating barrier with a land fence, received funding and in September was given the go-ahead; the pier extension was not.

An existing 500-foot-long pier will be extended by 540 feet to support Seawolf-, Los Angeles- and Virginia-class fast attack submarines. The existing services and compressor building will be moved to the end of the pier and a second, 2,100-square-foot service building added.

A 50,000-square-foot waterfront ship support building will be built upland, where there’s now a parking lot. Also, 420 parking spaces will be created.

The Seawolf arrived in Bremerton in July 2007 and the Connecticut in January 2008, from New London, Connecticut. It was never meant to be their permanent home.

They can only transit Rich Passage, which separates Bremerton from open water, in the daylight during high slack tides, the Navy said. They also are assigned to Submarine Development Squadron Five, which is headquartered at Bangor and trains at a facility there.

A supplemental environmental study will be conducted on the project, looking only at small changes to the design and new regulatory guidelines since the fall. It is expected to be available in early August for public review and comment.

Final approval for the pier extension is targeted for April 2018. The design contract was awarded in January. A construction award is planned for summer 2018. Construction will take about two years.

BOth of the LCS yards are busy yeard.

For both classes tou almost always can see three vessels outfitting and one or two building.

We now have sixteen of those hulls in the water...and with the omproviements in the armament that have been decided upon I am confortable that they will be able to perform normal FFG duties of ASW and ASuW attack and escrot, as well as their own personal AAW defense.

The US has not had decent FFG coverage for a long time. Ever since they defanged the last fifteen or twenty Perry FFGs almost 20 years ago.

Too bad they do not add even a eight cell VLS to these vessels and quad pack them with Evolved Sea Sparrow...that would allow them to also help protect other ships in their tak forces in terms of air defense...and an eight cell VLS could be added to both the Freedom and the Independence class.

As it is, we are going to have to be happy with the longer range ASMs, the better sensors and electronics, and the ability to have two ASW helos on any of them whenever needed.

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. John Richardson met in London with the First Sea Lord of the United Kingdom, Adm. Sir Philip Jones, Royal Navy and Chief of Naval Staff, Adm. Christophe Prazuck, French Navy, March 27.

This is the first time the three chiefs have held such an event., The importance of such collaboration can't be overstated given the increase in maritime competition worldwide and recent geo-political events.

As a result of the half-day session, the three chiefs of Navy affirmed their commitment to increased interoperability in a signed agreement that stated, "We believe this increased trilateral cooperation will help secure a future that is not only in the interests of our three nations, but in the common interests of our allies, partners, and all likeminded nations who are committed to peace, prosperity, and maritime security."

The U.S., U.K. and French navies have regularly operated together around the world. During this trilateral event, the three chiefs agreed there is room for more joint operations and for enhanced cooperation in the undersea domain and power projection.

Each navy is committed to an open and free maritime system based on respect for international law. Continued trilateral engagement and cooperation is in the interest of each individual country, NATO and the overall maritime community.
