Why inequality in America is worse than it is in China

But the paper points out that there has also been a big difference in the fortunes of those at the bottom in both countries — a difference that makes the income gap far worse in the U.S.

According to the research, the incomes of the bottom 50 percent in China (those earning less than $9,280, using purchasing power parity-adjusted exchange rates) fell from 27 percent in 1978 to 15 percent.

In the U.S., the bottom 50 percent (those with annual incomes below $36,000) have seen a "complete collapse" in their share of national income. Between 1978 and 2015, their share of income went from 20 percent to 12 percent — 3 points lower than China's.

"Policy discussions about rising global inequality should focus on how to equalize the distribution of primary assets," the researchers concluded. That includes better education, access to skills and minimum wage reform.

There are no details on how China's top 1% is calculated, so we don't know if it includes officials of the Communist Party. If it doesn't, then a large part, and maybe even the majority of China's ultra rich aren't counted for the study.

you would need to refresh your statistic subject .. it does say the share of the bottom 50% ... so it doesnt matter of the top 1% .. read again

also your tone is very subjective without any evidence or knowing .... purely based on biased US media ... very very sad ...... you may need to travel more to understand the reality of other countries (i.e China, Singapore, etc) ... I'd guarantee you, you would be in shock ......

I am not saying there is no corruption in China ... but saying the whole communist party officials are corrupt is way way wrong. Corruption is everywhere, including Donald Trump ... ooops sorry he cant do anything wrong according to your wrong logic :p

One per centers... two per centers... three per centers... four... all terms that started talking about the US. The only reason why they displaced it to China is to distract Americans from seeing the corrupt elite of the US. It happens every time something embarrassing that counters the US is perfect, never do wrong, always does right image. Watch when some ugly racist incident happens in the US. All of the sudden shortly after some article comes out about how China is racist. No specific incident but China is a worse racist. I especially like the article after all the recent police shooting scandals where it was reported that in China when Chinese see a black person walking towards them on the street, they cross the street. It's always something Americans do but now it's China so it's automatically worth international attention therefore worse than when they do it. Same with past homophobic attacks. All of the sudden China now has a homophobia problem. The last one was the negative comments on Caitlyn Bruce Jenner and all of the sudden China treats transgenders horribly. When somebody is painted as worse, it excuses their crime so it should be ignored. That's the point.

The simple reason why American healthcare and economics in general is failing so badly is because the super rich have captured all the key decision making bodies and also have accumulated so much wealth as to fundamentally skew and unbalance the decision making process of market economies.

When the top 1% of the American super rich has more wealth than the remaining 99% combined, is it any wonder markets, responding to supply and demand signals, supply the goods and services the 1% want over the remaining 99%?

American healthcare is so ridiculously expensive and inefficient compared to everyone else because the entire healthcare system has been fine tuned to serve the super rich rather than the majority.

For the money-is-no-object crowd, spending hundreds of thousands or even millions to get the very best care and cutting edge medical science is a no-brainier.

Similarly, for pharmaceutical and biotech companies, it makes the most sense to spend their R&D money developing drugs and treatments with super fat margins over those that might treat and benefit far more people, but yield much less profits.

It's easy to 'sell' such poor allocation of resources because it's political kryponite to mention the simple truth that human lives do equate to a certain monetary value when it comes to deciding funding.

Every precious snowflake may think their life is invaluable, but the cold hard arithmetic of life and death says that if it costs more to save your life than the lives of two or more others, your time is up unfortunately.

Because no one is willing to say this simple truth, the American healthcare system is stuck in the impossible position of having to provide millionaire standards of treatment to everyone who has insurance.

Insurance companies have to make ends meet and also a profit on top, so premiums keeps skyrocketing, pricing millions out of healthcare. So in effect, hundreds or even thousands of poor people die every day from poor or a total lack of treatment so the middle classes can enjoy the kind of super premium care only the super rich should normally be able to afford.

Healthcare in many ways is a microcosm of the American economy as a whole, where the basic needs of the majority of people are simply not being met when there are resources to do so, because those reasources are hoarded and directed by the few.

But the silent majority acquiesce to this gross inequality because the super rich has spun the alluring fantasy that any one of you unwashed masses could arise to join the ranks of the elite, so obviously is not in your interest to curtail the benefits of this exclusive club in the event you somehow manage to beat the astronomical odds and snatch one of the few golden tickets up for grabs.

Welcome to the real hunger games, may the odds ever be in your favour.

Mandatory health insurance and relationship with labor unions actually goes hand in hand.
In Japan, companies pays more or less 1/3 of mandatory health insurance of their employee and dependents, the nation 1/3 and the remaining 1/3 by the individual. The companies gains tax breaks from paying their part and insurance companies need to provide volume discount to major companies so the whole requires to pay less.
With this kind of scheme with annual check-up as preventive health care you have a more efficient work force with less worries for the employees resulting to a less pressful labor union since they have less to argue about.
