An update on PLAN's new training ship... She has been commissioned! Pendant number 83.

Below is a look good at the ship in high-definition (credit Henri KENHMANN).

Some specs according to the video:
- space for 400 cadets and 50 instructors.
- length = 163m, beam = 22m, 9000+ ton fully loaded, top speed = 22 knots

During a ceremony in Dalian, new Chinese Navy training ship is named „Qi Jiguang“ (83)

There are also two training ships for the two aircraft carriers Liaoning and Type_001A. Probably also with auditoriums and other schoolrooms. And this is also a clear sign that both STOBAR aircraft carriers mainly serve the training.

There's a difference between training ships vs combat capable ships serving as seed ships. CV-16 and the future CV-17 are both likely to be the latter rather than former.

The purpose of 83 OTOH is as a dedicated training ship for cadets who have yet to probably graduate and for whom 83 will probably be one of their first experiences aboard an actual naval vessel to learn the fundamentals.

I am glad they name her Qi Jiguang He is one of my hero. An upright outstanding Ming general who defeat once for all the Japanese pirate blight along Zhejiang and Fujian coast
He then fought the Mongol in the north.Winning battle after battle. Due to court intrigue he was banned as usual. May the spirit and dedication of the old general inspired the young cadet

To be able to train 400 students simultaneously, 83 Qi Ji Guang , now the biggest school ship in China, is equipped with two chart workrooms, a navigation simulation room, a training room for electromechanical systems and Other specific classrooms. The building will also allow its trainees to connect to different types of "War games" online.

The Type 927 also stands out from the two former ships schools of the Chinese Navy - the 81 Zheng He of Type 679 admitted in 1987 and the 82 Shichang of Type 891A admitted in 1996 - by the endowment of heavy armaments. The building is equipped, in particular, with a 76 mm gauge H / PJ-26 main gun and two CIWS H / PJ-17 gauges of 30 mm.

Aviation level, the ship is equipped with a helipont but it does not have a hangar.

Another interesting thing - the man whose name is carried by this type 927 school ship is considered a hero in China. Born in November 1528 under the Ming Dynasty, QI Ji Guang (戚继光) is a famous Chinese general for having eliminated the Japanese pirates, called the Wukao - who plundered the Chinese and Korean coasts from the thirteenth century to the sixteenth century.

IQ is renowned for its rigorous training of its troops and for its ingenuity of inventing new weapons and defense infrastructures. The man is also a writer and has left many military and literary works.

His army, called "IQ Army", had been sent to the North to fight against the Tatars, once the scourge of Japanese pirates eradicated. Until the death of their general, this army recorded more than 100,000 heads of enemies cut.

It should be noted that the previous 82 Shichang Ship-School also bears the name of another emblematic figure in the fight against the Japanese. DENG Shichang, a Qing Dynasty captain who died in the Battle of the Yalou River in 1894 with the 245 officers and crew of the Chinese cruiser Zhiyuan .

According to the

, thirty percent of the 16th century wokou were Japanese, seventy percent were ethnic Chinese.
But I wouldn't be surprised if in Chinese history books for schools those bandits would be 100% Japanese and to learn the truth you would need to get a uni degree.

Anyway - it looks like an ocean liner inside, I would call it even a floating hotel. It only lacks a pool. Again, the only logical answer to the question of why they made it so big is your usual 'because they can'. Why they don't send those fresh officers to the real warships for training to get them to the work knowing how big PLAN had became in the recent years or form a small training fleet consisting of soon to be decomissioned vessels where they would learn their work in the natural environment aboard a real warship?

It's built for Dalian Naval Academy. The cadres will continue to get trained on PLAN ships as they graduate to join the navy ranks.
