ITS Carabiniere starts ‘Italian industry showcase’ deployment
The Italian Navy’s Bergamini-class frigate ITS Carabiniere left the Italian port of La Spezia for an ‘Italian industry showcase’ deployment to Australia and Southeast Asia.

ITS Carabiniere is a FREMM frigate built for the Italian Navy by Fincantieri within the framework of an Italo-French cooperation program under the coordination of OCCAR (Organisation Conjointe de Cooperation sur l’Armement, the international organization for cooperation on arms).

Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri is currently bidding to design and build nine, new frigates for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). The company was short-listed by the Australian government together with British BAE Systems with its Type 26 frigate design and the Spanish Navantia which is to upgrade its F100 frigate design.

ITS Caribiniere sailed out of La Spezia on December 20 to start the promotional tour financed by Fincantieri.

Apart from Fincantieri, Leonardo MBDA and Telespazio are some of the Italian companies taking part in this promotion of the Italian industry.

The ship will enter more than ten ports on its deployment and take part in exercises with different regional navies in the following months.

Time to drain F-35 Joint Strike Fighter swamp

Yep...alll of the F-35 naysayers are groping for ending the project.

But again I say...the beat goes on.

Trump will work the art of the deal...and probably make things better. but in the end, he will not cancel or end the project.

Too many countries buying in...to many allies want what the F-35 is bringing to the table.

...and the price is already dropping.

Trump may indeed make it cleaner and wring some more drop out of it...but in the end, it will be the most successful and most prolific 5th generation aircraft out there.

Heck, with 200+ airframes already out of the factory...it already is. But those numbers are going to go up into the thousands.

according to NavalToday Spanish frigate deploys to Australia for AWD support
Spanish Navy’s Álvaro de Bazán-class frigate Cristóbal Colón is scheduled to embark on a long-term deployment to Australia on January 9.

Under an agreement between the two navies, the Aegis-equipped frigate will spend 120 days in Australia where it will help train future Australian Hobart-class destroyer sailors of the Australian Navy.

By integrating into the Australian Navy fleet, Cristóbal Colón will provide dedicated training and familiarisation opportunities for the crews of Australian destroyers Hobart, Brisbane and Sydney.

NUSHIP Hobart, the first of three destroyers, will start category 5 sea trials in mid-January 2017 and will be assisted in the process by ESPS Cristóbal Colón.

If everything goes according to plan, the Spanish frigate is expected to return to Ferrol, Spain in early August 2017.

This is not the first time a Spanish Navy ship is integrating into the Royal Australian Navy. Back in 2013, Spain sent its replenishment ships ESPS Cantabria to Australia where it remained for eight months.

Australian shipbuilder ASC cuts jobs
oh really?
Australian government-owned shipbuilder ASC announced it would cut 130 jobs from its air-warfare destroyer project by the end of February.

The cuts are due to a reduced amount of work on the three Hobart-class destroyers.

The number of people required for work on the ships has been reducing since early 2015.

ASC will cut some 45 trade positions while another 85 positions would be reduced in the welding, painting, operator and other trade groups.

The company added that the workforce reductions would have no impact on ASC’s submarine workforce or planning for the future submarine project.

In October 2016, ASC split into three businesses to better focus on the projects ahead. The split resulted in the creation of shipbuilding, submarine sustainment and infrastructure companies.
