"Operation Chammal, carried out against the Islamic state (EI or Daesh) in Iraq and Syria, was marked by an intensive use of the SCALP cruise missile (long-range autonomous conventional cruise system).

Since 15 December 2015, the French air force has carried out nearly 10 air raids with this ammunition. The most recent was carried out on November 29 by the Rafales of the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and those deployed by the Air Force in Jordan against "important military installations of Daesh in the southwest of the city of Raqqa. "

In total, eight SCALP missiles, fired by 4 Rafale of the Air Force and 2 Rafale M of the naval aeronautics, destroyed a facility for the production and storage of weapons, in particular chemical weapons. The mission was planned by the Combined Joint Task Force (CJTF) in Kuwait and conducted by the Combined Air Operations Center (CAOC) in Al Udeid, Qatar .

It is not the first time that aviators and sailors have performed a "strike in depth" together. Such a raid had indeed already taken place on the night of 15 to 16 October. There, too, eight SCALP missiles were fired at an EI warehouse about thirty kilometers south of Mosul.

Of the 450 SCALP missiles delivered to the Air Force (and 50 to the French Navy), it was only planned to modernize one hundred under the current Military Program Act (MPA). Also, as much draw from the stock, as long as they are not yet "outdated".

However, the Armed Forces General Staff (EMA) gave another justification for this intense use of SCALP missiles.

"Scalp raids are precisely and thoroughly planned to optimize the effects of this weapon to unique, high-value targets for the terrorist group. To the effect of surprise offered by the weapon, is added that of the control of the blows carried, limiting the collateral damage, optimizing the effects against Daesh. By choosing precisely the points of impact, after a phase of intelligence, this type of strike makes it possible to destroy all the places used by the terrorist group almost simultaneously, "he explains.

During the past week, French aviation made 97 sorties over Iraq and Syria, including 5 intelligence (ISR), 7 command and control with the E2C Hawkeye aircraft carrier Charles De Gaulle and 85 of armed reconnaissance. In all, it has destroyed 24 AI objectives."

The Guardian publishes an bizarre article today with a video,

,
in which the British Foreign minister says:
“There are politicians who are twisting and abusing religion and different strains of the same religion in order to further their own political objectives. That’s one of the biggest political problems in the whole region. And the tragedy for me – and that’s why you have these proxy wars being fought the whole time in that area – is that there is not strong enough leadership in the countries themselves.”
The foreign secretary then identified Saudi Arabia and Iran specifically, saying: “That’s why you’ve got the Saudis, Iran, everybody, moving in, and puppeteering and playing proxy wars.”
In an attack of honesty he accuses Saudi Arabia of fighting proxy wars in the Middle East, so including Syria and Yemen. In both wars UK stands on the side of Saudi Arabia!
The video is especially interesting.

I said cautios ... I had heard yesterday (not about 'a precision strike' though) Coalition Strikes Mosul Hospital
On Dec. 6th, Iraqi Security Forces attempted to seize the Al Salem hospital complex from ISIL fighters in the heart of East Mosul. ISIL was using the hospital as a base of operations and command and control headquarters. After seizing the area, the ISF fought off several counterattacks and six VBIEDs the following day before retrograding a short distance, under heavy enemy fire, to strengthen their position.

On Dec. 7th, after Iraqi forces continued to receive heavy and sustained machine gun and rocket propelled grenade fire from ISIL fighters in a building on the hospital complex, they requested immediate support from the Coalition. In support of the Iraqi Security Forces, Coalition aircraft conducted a precision strike on the location to target enemy fighters firing on Iraqi forces.

The Coalition complies with the Law of Armed Conflict and takes all feasible precautions during the planning and execution of airstrikes to reduce the risk of harm to non-combatants. We will continue to strike ISIL military targets in support of our partners in order to defeat ISIL in Iraq.

Several other countries also deserve mention but arguably no one is fighting a proxy war anymore since everyone is directly participating.

Syria conflict: Army 'suspends Aleppo fighting'

Syria's army has suspended combat operations in eastern Aleppo, Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says.

The move is to allow for the evacuation of civilians trapped in the battle zone. Mr Lavrov said some 8,000 people would be taken out.
