It's looks interesting and again the protagonist is not Japanese or Asian.

To be honest it doesn't really matter cause she's a cyborg and "Makoto Kusanagi" was really just the name that they gave her. Cyborgs don't have a ethnicity and in reality Ghost In the Shell has little care about such simple differences. It's preferably why Mamoru Oshii, the director of the original GOTS anime voice his support for this movie.

Just came back from Arrival. I am really split on the film in the sense that I can't decide whether it's my favorite movie of the year or my favorite movie of the DECADE. For me, it is a thinking man's science fiction that successfully blends the cosmic, philosophical theme with a touching human backstory. In short, it set up to achieve the same effects as Interstellar, but in my humble opinion did so with more finesse and success than its popular predecessor. A rare 10/10 for me. If you haven't seen this in theatre yet, please check it out. I haven't been more excited about a movie since I saw 2001: A Space Odyssey ten years ago.

I saw Hacksaw Ridge today. If events were depicted truly, Desmond Doss has to be most deserving recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor ever. The question I have is why didn't the Japanese just cut the net used to climb the ridge? Too bad Hollywood probably still wants to punish Mel Gibson so he won't be getting a lot of Oscar worthy recognition.

praised Damon's Chinese calligraphy skills — demonstrated on the red carpet in a glitzy event on Tuesday.

You know, when the article said the Chinese media was praising Matt Damon for his calligraphy skills, I was thinking: "okay, so the guy probably learned to write a couple of words and the media is hyping it up because he's a foreigner".

Then I saw this picture.

I have to say, if this is really his own writing, I've found a whole new level of respect for Damon! You don't get to this level of calligraphy by just learning a few words. His writing style shows an ease and facility with written Chinese that makes me envious!

Yep! I don't think I can write it as well as he did. Heck, I didn't even know how to pronounce the words until I saw the Pin-Yin above the writing on the second board...

I think this would be one of the 9 sons of the dragon king... I was hoping that they wouldn't do that... Although Chinese legends do suggest that some of the dragon's sons eat human for fun, I don't think they should be portrayed as monsters...

Actually, the Taotie is one of the original "monsters" of Chinese mythology, it represents gluttony:

Yeah, the problem is that unless someone is very familiar with different creatures in Chinese mythology or the differences are explained in the movie most people including many Chinese will just think "dragon", or maybe "kirin" thanks to the beer, when they see the depiction.

I think most Chinese have heard of the Taotie, even if they might not know exactly what it is. In the end though, it doesn't really matter, as they will just be "monsters".
