I thought they said China's supercomputers were just prestige projects. They're not actual supercomputers like everyone else's.

The only real difference with what they can really do now and what they charge here is China has a cutesy robot that roams around with cameras while they're stuck with fixed surveillance cameras. Or maybe they just have a problem with the cattle prod...

* Machine is expected to do over 1,000 quadrillion calculations per second
* This equals to 20 million desktop computers working simultaneously
* The new model was announced by China's state-run media on November 2

Awesome, this means far greater simulations of aerodynamic testing accuracy for hypersonic planes, HGV and all anti-ship ballistic missiles with maneuvering capabilities. :D

It'd be a great accomplishment, if it's successively developed. We'll have to wait for more facts to come out on progress.

It is a good news. But it is a pretty old news. Dailymail is aperantly behind the tracking of development.

1,000 quadrillion is 1018 which is exaFLOPS. If I remember correctly, China has revealed the plan around the time when Obama blocked Intel's sale to China, soon before Taihulight came to the TOP500 between half and one year ago.

US is also developing exaFLOPS computer and hope to slow China down by blocking Intel chip to China.

Nah, I think this is new. Everyone, China, USA, Japan, etc... has always had "plans" to get an exascale supercomputer; they've planned it for 2017-2023 (China 2017-2020; Japan 2020; USA 2023) for a long time but we've heard nothing specific. A few months ago, China announces that it created 3 separate architectures to reach exascale, 3 separate paths of exploration. Now, this is the first time that we've heard that physical work to build at least 1 has begun.

From what I've gathered from a news report, the development in China is now at the stage of building a test model of the Exascale supercomputer. The test model, not the Exascale supercomputer itself, is expected to be ready next year.
