Nearly 500 dead, food running out in Aleppo: UN chief
The nearly month-long Russian and Syrian bombing campaign in Aleppo has had horrific results with nearly 500 dead and food rations expected to run out by the end of the month, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Thursday.

"The conflict continues to reach new and awful depths," Ban told a special meeting of the General Assembly called by 72 countries in an initiative led by Canada.

The air strikes on rebel-held eastern Aleppo since the Syrian offensive was launched on September 22 have been the most sustained and intensive bombardment of the five-year war, said Ban.

"The results have been horrific", said the UN chief, with nearly 500 people killed and about 2,000 injured. More than a quarter of all deaths are children.

No UN aid convoy has entered Aleppo since July 7 and food rations will run out by the end of October, Ban warned, deploring that hunger was being used as a weapon of war.

The meeting at the General Assembly was called after the Security Council failed to take action to end the bombing raids on Aleppo and revive peace efforts.

Two resolutions were defeated during a stormy council session earlier this month, one of which was vetoed by Russia, which is backing the Syrian regime in its war against opposition fighters and jihadists.

Russia this week declared a humanitarian pause in the assault on rebel-held eastern Aleppo, where more than 250,000 civilians have been under near-continuous siege since July.

Canada's foreign minister welcomed Russia's decision to extend a ceasefire in Aleppo but said it was not enough to improve aid access and raise prospects for peace negotiations in Syria.

"This is a positive sign," Foreign Minister Stephane Dion told AFP. "But it is not enough."

"We all want to see a return to negotiations" to end the war and ensure deliveries of aid to desperate civilians besieged in Aleppo, he said.

"We can't do this on the basis of such a short pause."

The foreign minister said the assembly meeting could have "positive consequences" and could put pressure on "those who can take concrete measures."

"We can expect that everyone will agree on a cessation of hostilities and opening up aid deliveries, but this must be said in the loudest way possible and that's the goal of today's meeting," he said.

The inhabitants should escape the famine. There is a interruption in the assault to make this possible. And if the terrorists don't allow the people to escape then that is another reason to destroy them. The same arguments are valid for the assault on Mosul.

Not according to the NY Times. They are implying that the Russian are not to be trusted and civilians should be weary from evacuating a soon to be war zone. The third paragraph highlighted and gave credence to this quote. “All the human corridors that the regime is promoting, are all lies,” Bassem Ayoud, an antigovernment activist, said via an internet message. “What’s happening is an extermination of people.”

The NY Times is serving as propaganda tools for Al Nusra at the expense of the civilians trapped in Aleppo.

Aleppo's rebel enclave rejects evacuation offer
No civilians and only eight wounded opposition fighters took advantage of the Russian- and Syrian-declared ceasefire in Aleppo on 20 October to leave the besieged city, according to Moscow's Centre for Reconciliation of Opposing Sides in the Syrian Arab Republic.

Despite the apparent lack of success, the Russian Ministry of Defence announced a 24-hour extension to the ceasefire until the evening of 21 October. The ceasefire followed a unilateral bombing pause by the Russian air wing deployed to Syria that began on 18 October.

Opposition groups in the city denounced the ceasefire and opening of 'humanitarian corridors' out of Aleppo by the Syrian government forces as a trick to try to force the evacuation and then surrender of the city.

There were media reports on 20 October of mortar and small-arms fire along the confrontation lines in the city, with the Russian military reporting three of its officers, who were manning a checkpoint on one of eight humanitarian corridors, suffering "slight injuries".

The three weeks running up to the pause in bombing saw Syrian government troops capture a swath of land in northern Aleppo city since starting a major offensive against the besieged opposition held enclave on 24 September.

The three-week offensive by pro-government forces that preceded the ceasefire captured a swath of largely uninhabited terrain in the north of the city. Syrian Arab Army troops, backed by Palestinian militia fighters, pushed around 4 km into the opposition-held enclave across a 4 km front.

The extent of the advance was confirmed by statements from government and opposition spokesmen, as well as analysis of news and social media imagery showing key landmarks being occupied by government troops.

Syrian troops of the 102nd and 106th Republican Guards Brigades, supported by contingents from the Palestinian Liwa al-Quds militia, were filmed using tanks, artillery, anti-tank guided weapons, and anti-aircraft guns during the advance.
