The Indian Navy will install older torpedoes at its new submarine

The Indian Navy will soon admit to active service on Kalvari, a new submarine of the Scorpene class, which will be armed with old German torpedoes SUT. This submarine was to be equipped with torpedoes Blackshark, but the Ministry of Defence refused at the last moment.

In a strange position, which illustrates how the Indian armies are forced to operate, the Indian Navy had no choice but to install the old weaponry on a brand new platform.

After many delays, the Indian Navy is about to admit to active service the first submarine for almost 20 years. However, the ministry's decision not to buy 98 heavy torpedoes Blackshark, who was yet validated the choice so far, was an unpleasant surprise to the navy.

This will lead to a scenario where a new submarine will join the fleet (probably by the end of the year) without its main weapon: the torpedo.

High-level sources confirmed that it did not leave the Indian Navy with no choice but to arm its new submarine with former German torpedoes SUT. These torpedoes are currently used on submarines U-209 of German origin, Shishumar class.

The first copy, the Kalvari, is currently at the shipyard Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited of Mumbai. It will resume its sea trials during the first week of September, after the monsoon. During these tests, the test Kalvari areas such as diving, speed and maneuvering capabilities.

"As the Kalvari is the first of six submarines to be built, we sometimes encounter problems. We hope to have them corrected by the end of the year. We can then test the launch of modernized SUT torpedoes. This is not so much a hardware problem than software. His adaptation is feasible, we are assured, "said a senior source.

"We have nearly 60 SUT torpedoes which were upgraded for former 4 submarines of the class Shishumar. Now the Scorpene submarines will also use this torpedo, which means even more tension. But it's better than nothing, "said a source.

According to experts, even modernized, the SUT torpedo is far below the level that the Indian Navy hoped choosing the Blackshark.

"The SUT torpedo is a technology of the 80s and has limitations. By choosing the Blackshark we wanted ranges of over 50 km. It has better capabilities of prosecution and tracking, "said an officer.

Nevertheless, there is in the Indian Navy who think the SUT was ahead of his time when it came out and it still remains a very good weapon.

Vice Admiral KN Sushil, former submariner, said "There is no problem to install an old torpedo on a new platform. However, we must ask whether this is what we want. "

He added that "The Blackshark is an advance on the SUT torpedo in many ways. It's time to make full use of the policy "Make In India" and become an autonomous country in this area. Our previous attempts to manufacture torpedoes failed in the 90s now, the DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) manufactured torpedoes that can only be launched from a surface ship, not from a submarine. "

The Blackshark is manufactured by a company subsidiary of Italian group Finmeccanica Leonardo, related to corruption charges as part of a tender for a helicopter.

The Defence Minister, Manohar Parrikar, reportedly said it would cancel the agreement and that the department had alternatives. Sources confirm that, now, the SUT is this alternative until a new supply materializes, which could take years.

Bad JU JU! really out to stick with something cutting edge, as I imagine that submarine warfare will be picking up, especially with a couple of aircraft carriers to protect!

It never really said why they are not doing the Blackshark.

Pricing?

Technical issues?

Why did the deal fall through?

And no ;)

i doubt if a regular maintenance and refit would take 8 months. here is a different quote on the timeline which sounds more reasonable, coming from a newspaper that is not a joke -
