The Iranians are pushing the envelope strongly.

They calculate that they can get more mileage and maybe more concessions out of this administration before the vote in November and a new admin next January.

Time will tell whether they are calculating properly...but they have clearly forgotten the lesson of the Preying Mantis.

Personally I think they want us to hit them so they can play the David vs Goliath narrative! In their minds we're the big bully and they know they can't go toe to toe with us therefore they want us to draw first blood and then garner sympathy from the rest of the world or at least the Mideast/Russia etc.

Mideast relations and politics is like the hardest game of chess you'll ever play! Every single move has to be delicately calculated otherwise the repercussions down the road is enormous as we've witness over and over again in the past couple decades!

Anyway that's my armchair analysis!

US supporting Saddam Hussein - its very unlikely Iran will forget that. The current conduct of Iran is more likely a reaction to the treacly way US is executing the Iran nuclear agreement - think of delaying the payment of $ 400m until US nationals were freed - and the US support for militants in Syria that they cannot force to keep to the cease fires they have agreed with Russia since February.

I do not deny that the US interests do not align with the Iranians. But it is precisely Obama's weakness in the Iranian deal that has led to this. They want to get more out of him while he is still in office.

My point is that the US needs to have a leadership and administration that is willing to apply a Preying MAntis to the current illegal and warmongering that the Iranians are conducting on the high seas in international waters.

OT
Political.
US is threatening Iran as they have done since 1979 when Iran used its hold over the US embassy personal destroy the hold of the old Shah regime and disrupt any US planning to intervene. The Iranians well remember 1953. They remember the destruction of an Iranian oil platform as a US reaction for the Iraqi attack on USS Stark. They helped US defeat the Taliban and were paid by being labelled as part of the Axis of Evil.
The purpose of the Iranians is not war, they are the much weaker party, but deterrence. And they help the authorities in Iraq and Syria against their enemies who are sponsored by foreign powers.
US should have the strength of mind to restore diplomatic relations with Iran. Too often US use violence instead of diplomacy.

it would've looked, and acted, like this LOL!
There were four of these harassing maneuver last week.

Seems to me its past time to employ the new VLS launched, fire and forget Lockheed martin AGM-114L Longbow Hellfire missile that the US Navy tested in 2015 aboard the LCS.

They fied three missiles at three individual targets and destroyed each one in succession.

Here's some pics of one of those engagements:

They then ripple fired three missiles at three boats...and destroyed all three of them.

Here's a pic from that last engagement:

I think we ought to load up the Cyclones, or even the Burkes with these missiles.

It is a VLS canister than bolts onto the deck, a canister of 24 missiles which is small as ASMs go. They can be targeted either by the vessel, or a helo or aircraft.

Once fired, it uses its own guidance to then take it into the target it received from the original sensors.

I believe a few Iranian fast boats would be an excellent live test if they keep pushing it like they are.
