Russia launches large snap military drills

Source: AFP

Moscow (AFP) - Russia on Thursday launched large-scale snap military drills, putting its troops on full combat readiness in districts bordering Ukraine and the Baltic states, the defence minister said.

"In accordance with the decision of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (President Vladimir Putin), a spot check started today," Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said in televised comments.

Troops in the country's southern, central and western military districts, as well as the air force, northern fleet and paratroopers were in "full combat" mode as of 0400 GMT, he said.

The drills -- which are taking place in military districts that encompass the contested Crimea peninsula, the region that borders Ukraine and NATO members Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, as well as territory spanning from the Ural mountains to central Siberia -- are set to last until the end of the month.

Shoigu did not reveal how many troops are taking part in the exercises.

Relations between NATO and Russia have soured since Moscow annexed the Crimea peninsula of Ukraine in March 2014, and eastern European countries are worried that they too could be targets of Russian aggression.

NATO vowed at a summit in Warsaw in July to bolster its eastern flank to counter a resurgent Russia, agreeing to deploy four battalions in Poland and the Baltic states.

Moscow slammed the decision, accusing NATO of working to counter a "non-existent threat."

Since Moscow annexed Crimea from Ukraine in March 2014, Russia has stepped up its military presence in the peninsula, which is home to its Black Sea fleet.

Russia's most advanced air defence system, the S-400, was delivered to Crimea earlier this month.

That is a very real threat to the USA aircraft carrier fleet. This missile and the stealthy Kilo class submarine hamper or destroy a majority of the carrier fleet and leave the United States without the ability to project power and most importantly control the shipping lanes in the event of war.

Very disturbing
Thy say:

A salvo by a Tu-22M3 regiment would guarantee the elimination of the carrier itself and all of her escorts - cruisers, destroyers and guided missile frigates.

Yet these are p[recisely the types of targets the AEGIS system I designed to defeat.

I am not doubting that they are dangerous...they are.

But it comes down to how well the AEGIS system performs, and I believe we found after the cold war was over, when we got to look at similar systems the Soviets designed...that there was every likelihood that our missile defense systems would work effectively against them.

That's not to say that there would not be losses...in any major war there are.

But equally so, thee would be successes, and not every regiment of TU-22Ms would:

1) Find their target.
2) Get to the launch point if a war was going on.
3) Have their missiles decimate and entire CSG.

Let's pray to God in Heaven we never have to find out...but if it ever occurred, I am sure the AEGIS system would perform better than most may think and that despite losses, the losses to the other side would be equally or even more heavily weighted.

If you get a chance, red the book called: "The Sixth Battle"

A very realistic and compelling scenario of just this type of engagement.

Some comments,

Good report.

I have yet see these red missiles on Tu-22M, with 1000 km range CAP can' t intercept Tu-22M in general with E-2C 400/500 km, SAM the best SM-6, 240 km...

Mach 5 so hypersonic much more difficult to intercept but not impossible but if confirmed fact are it is a terrible missile and Soviet/Russian especialy Raduga know do it from long time, only things all their missiles are not sea skimming.

For numbers of Tu-22M, hmmm Navy from several years don' t have, remains in AF 63 whose 41 operationnals in 3 Rgts, i have posted few days ago, only Russian Bomber equiped with AShM, AS-4 very big, mach 3, warhead 1 t ! no sea skimming but old and definitely much less capable now vs modern ECM.

Russia to Activate a Coastal Defense Division Across from Alaska in 2018
The Russian Defense Ministry is planning the activation of a coastal defense division in Chukotka in 2018, the minister, Sergei Shoigu, has told journalists. "A coastal defense division is planned for activation in the Chukotka area of operations in 2018," he said.

The Chukotka Peninsula is the eastmost peninsula of Asia. Its eastern end is at Cape Dezhnev, the eastmost mainland point of Eurasia just 82 kilometres (51 mi) across from Cape Prince of Wales in Alaska; the Bering Strait lies between the two capes.

I've accidentally noticed the wiki page of "Redut AA VLS" (officially 3К96-2)

contains info saying most recently the target imitating an AShM was hit, under electronic warfare conditions, by a missile (don't say if 9М96, 9М96Д or 9М100) launched off
