It won't be too heavy. A high grade steel hollow head can be both strong and light. Two or three kilograms. That is nothing.

Could a hollow mace still support those spikes? Wouldn't those spikes become too weak if they were hollow?

LOL, I went and dug a big more, and found this article:

Authorities are basically saying it's only for show, and the PAP soldiers wielding them haven't been trained in its use.

It's also implied that they may have been purchased on Taobao. :D

So, just a really dumb idea.

I guess if the wall is 5 mm think of high toughness steel, it will be strong enough to support those spikes. The spikes should not be hollow, imagine concrete nails. After all the mace is against flesh and bones, not a rock.

If it is just a show, I would remove the officials immediately. PAP is not some cheap actors in a low budget movie for stunt.

What if this is a movie prop? They might be shooting some crazy nonsense movie/TV show about ancient people coming back to the future...

I mean this makes no sense to be used in the real world. Something this big would be useless against swords and knives, even if it is hollow... It's too cumbersome and too slow...

Yeah, too cumbersome and slow. It's not as if maces and halberds were ever shown to be effective against swords or anything historically.

Why not just shoot them with guns like police everywhere else?
now we know it was a stunt according to some report, so I take it as a pure discussion of its effectiveness.

In one of my posts, I mentioned the Kunming attack, an officer shot multiple shots within 10 meters to disable the attacker in seconds. I also mentioned the training video of American police of countering a knife welding attacker. The attacker reached the officer (in the demonstration video) in less than 2 seconds. If officer did not manage to kill the attacker in 2 seconds, the officer will be dead because the attacker won't collapse in that 2 seconds if the shot is not fatal, he probably won't feel a thing.

So my thought is that, pistol is less effective than a long weapon to keep a safe distance and also lethal enough to disable or kill the attacker.
