Competition is good for everybody .... doesn't really matter whether hydrogen or battery would "win" in the future ... it has to be good for the world ... but who knows somebody may come up something totally different and much better in the future :)

Hydrogen can be generated through photo catalytic exchange utilizing for example SrTiO3 and/or La5Ti2CuS5O7.
NEDO(New Energy Development Organization) of Japan has already reached 3% efficiency rate and is aiming 10% by 2020.

As I said Japan is doing various R&D in this field to make Hydrogen Society a reality.

And what happens if/when hydrogen costs drop enough?

Hydrogen production and transport is a mechanical process at the end of the day.

Hydrogen (H2) offers only marginal environmental benefits when compared to compressed natural gas (CH4) anyway, but will almost certainly cost a lot more than natural gas.

And there are very good reasons why compressed natural gas vehicles haven't been adopted more widely in the world, even though the technology is mature.

===

Electric batteries just offer so many more opportunities for technological improvement, plus they are now in widespread production which is driving down costs.

Also a couple of other points on your theories.

Yes, oil will become less important as time goes on, but as explained before, it is more likely an electric energy future (globally) rather than a hydrogen one. Although it may end up as hydrogen just in Japan, which would be a shame.

But if we look to 10 years time, we could expect a Chinese oil benchmark to be established which may would not use the USD as the contract currency.

The USD will probably still be the global reserve currency, but the RMB would also be backed by a larger Chinese economy which would put a lot more pressure on the USD.

Type 12s are the new missiles that have data link to enable to change target at mid course and have GPS targeting as well.
Type 12 is also capable of vertical launch to minimize locating point of launch.

JMSDF Atago AEGIS Upgrade

S. Korean Se Jong AEGIS Upgrade

SeaWaves said:
August 15, 2016 - The global Aegis fleet will expand in the U.S., Japan and the Republic of Korea under a $490 million deal with Lockheed Martin to bring integrated air and missile defense (IAMD) capabilities to new destroyers.

The ships will be equipped with Aegis Baseline 9, the latest evolution of the combat system, capable of IAMD. The Aegis system includes Lockheed Martin's SPY-1 radar, the Navy's most advanced multi-function radar system. When paired with the MK 41 Vertical Launching System, it is capable of delivering missiles for every mission and threat environment in naval warfare.

"Lockheed Martin has a proud record of working hand-in-hand with the U.S. Navy, Japanese Maritime Self Defense Forces and the Republic of Korea Navy," said Jim Sheridan, director of Lockheed Martin Aegis U.S. Navy programs. "We will continue the Lockheed Martin tradition of providing Aegis on-time and on-budget so these destroyers are prepared to meet the evolving demands of securing the U.S. homeland and its allies."

This contract comes on the heels of a successful joint-missile defense exercise in June in which Aegis destroyers from the three nations shared data while detecting and tracking a simulated missile threat.

Under this new production hardware contract, Lockheed Martin will expand the Aegis fleet in the U.S. Navy and in:

• Japan: The seventh and eighth Aegis ships will join Japan's fleet. Aegis provides four of Japan's Kongo-class destroyers and two Atago-class destroyers with advanced sea, air and undersea threat detection capabilities. The Self Defense Forces of Japan joined the Aegis family in 1993.

• Republic of Korea (RoK): Aegis will join the next three KDX-III Sejong the Great Class destroyers, a multi-purpose destroyer with air and land defense and anti-submarine capabilities. Aegis is aboard three KDX-III destroyers: RoK Sejong the Great, RoK Yulgok Yi I and RoK Seoae Ryu Sungryong, which are the largest surface warfare ships to carry Aegis.

The Republic of Korea joined the international Aegis fleet in 2008, when the navy commissioned the first ship of the class, Sejong the Great.

As the Aegis Combat System Engineering Agent, Lockheed Martin continues to develop new Aegis capabilities and find innovative ways to deploy them across the more than 100 ships in the U.S. and international Aegis Fleets. This innovation is possible in part due to the open architecture of the Aegis Combat System and the Common Source Library, which allows engineers to integrate new systems and capabilities across baselines, as well as affordably distribute the upgrades throughout the fleet in a "build once, use many times" design philosophy.
Pretty much is sealing the deal and paving the way for these new five AEGIS vessels for Japan and South Korea.

what would be the time window? wild guess of the time of an incoming missile's flight: five minutes
I still wonder about the reaction time for ABMD ... dated Wed Aug 24, 2016 12:04am EDT:

Few seconds after launch if they know where to search like in case of North Korean launches.
thanks ... actually I was wondering who would have the authorization to launch AB missiles (since the time is so short, I guess the counter-strike would have to be "preapproved" I mean no time for an additional phone call)

In Japan Minister of Defence gives an order to shoot down a BM coming towards Japanese territory after getting acknowledgement from Prime Minister. After that SDF Joint Staff decides on the method of shooting it down. The order is valid for a longer span of time than just launch. It's more like a month or so, until which it gets's cancelled or renewed.
