China military schools, education and training

There seems to be no category in the forum for Military Education, which could include topics about Chinese military academies, schools, war colleges, training, education, PLA doctrine, etc. So I thought I'll start a thread incase people want to talk about this. I'm always interested to know how China trains its military or cadets.

I thought this was an interesting article:

China has over 18,000 military schools for young people

China has more than 18,000 military schools for young people and more than 20 million Chinese youngsters attend them each year for national defense education.

The Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China said here Sunday that the schools provide activities such as summer camps, physical training and military survival skill contests.

The defense education and the military experience the young people receive in the schools have strengthened their national pride and their awareness of defense issues, the committee said.

The youth military schools are run by the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China and the Chinese Young Pioneers supported by the PLA and the Ministry of Public Security. They are an important form of national defense education for young Chinese.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the founding of these schools which were set up in April, 1996.

I wonder, what age range does "young people" include? From 13 or 14 on up? Does 18,000 military schnools sound like a large number? I guess because China has a lot of people.

One question, would be this like the equivalent to the air cadets or something in the UK? or is it more intense or whatever? i rememeber some people going to air cadets quite young, i can't remember exact ages i think it was definitley below 15 years old.

I know for a fact that you can join the cadets in Canada at the age of 13. It could be lower, but the youngest I've met was 13 I almost joined the air cadet, mainly because i can get a glider pilot license free and there are also some pilot trainings, etc. but then my parents stopped me because the application form mentioned something about wartime duties... guess they didn't want me to be involved in war.

At the professional level, China has the PLA National Defence Academy. I'm not sure, but since the Air Force and Navy are both technically branches of the PLA I think that this is the only state-run professional military academy for officer commissioning that China has. This structure would be contrasted by the structure of training for officers in the US, where there is West Point for the Army, Annapolis for the Navy and the Air Force Community.


OH GOD! I was reading another forum doing some research about this and I just found out that they're gonna move NORAD out of it's mountain fortress and into the middle of some base! Out in the open!! I'm gonna make a thread about this.

Where is the National Defence Academy located? How many years does it take for someone to graduate? Do students enter at around age 17 and 18?

National Defence Academy located at Beijing, it is directly under the leadership of PLA Central Commitee. It mainly provide trainings or post-graduate level education to PLA brigade commanders and candidates of PLA General. it also recruit student from middle level officers of PLA. in addition, they got a department for international students, one student became a president in an african nation after graduated.. historically, NDA can be routed to Red Army school(not sure the school name in english ) and military and political school of Anti Japan in world war II.

What is China's equivalent to the US military academies like Annapolis and West Point? What I mean is, is there one or more schools that is specifically for young people, like ages 17-22, to train to become commissioned officers in the PLA?

Also, are there any officer training programs for civilian university graduates, or for PLA enlisted people?

I think it is the PLA National Defence Academy. Like I said earlier, the Navy and Air Force are both branches of the Army in China, so I would assume there is one military academy that trains PLAN, PLAAF and PLA officers.
