Military Coup in Turkey under way?

  • Coup attempt by parts of Turkish military against Erdogan
  • PM Yildirim: Nothing will harm Turkish democracy
  • Low flying jets and gunfire heard in Turkish capital
  • Both of Istanbul's bridges across the Bosphorus closed

Looks like it was successful. This kinda came out of the blue, what's the impetus behind it? Which of Erdogan's myriad of asinine policies was the prime driver?

Indeed, looks like it's ongoing still. What's behind this coup, anybody know?
Turkish army was always against becoming a religious (Islamist) state. What you're seeing here is a coup against becoming more of a religious state that Erdogan et al had staged. Army always won in such situations. Seems like 30's Japan to tell you the truth... But there no one won the game. In Turkey it's always 1-0 situation.

Long overdue, Turks are sick of having their freedoms shackled by an extremist, about time we got our allies back. This is likely in response to the nightmare in Europe, and make no mistake, it is a nightmare. No one on this forum cares more deeply about freedom to worship than I, but when you seek to impose your religion on others by force, you have introduced a religious Tyrant.

Erdogan called his supporters on the streets but all I can see there are those who support the army forces...
We'll see tomorrow...

Army and justice system have been the core defender of Kemal Ataturk's legacy, separation mosque from state.
Erdogan's moves showed that he attempt to make Turkey a religious country again.
As the firewall between EU and ME, european needs Turkey stay secular.
I expect army would struggle with Erdogan for a long time, but surprisingly they cease him swiftly.
