Chinese 96-A

No salt on the PLAGF. If they come second again this year then it only means it took another 8 T-72Bs to top a Type 96.;)

The new Type-96B features a new hull with a more powerful engine, probably in the 950+ hp range. Presumably ~1100 hp. It doesn't come with a commanders independent panoramic sight, but it does have a laser warning receiver(circular thing between the commanders and loaders hatch) and an IFF system mounted on both sides of the cage armor. The meteorological sensor has been made taller, and the radio antenna has switched position to the other side of the turret.

The new hull resembles that of the VT-4, with an extra exhaust but (almost) the same grilles. I wonder if the FCS has been changed to deliver rounds more accurately on target. In the competition of 2014, the type-96A fired on the move with such a high speed that it worsened the accuracy of fire. In 2015, they drove slower and delivered their rounds more accurately on target. I think that the FCS or maybe even the gun has been changed to truly fire on the move with more accuracy.

Yes, firing while moving will have worse accuracy than sitting still, but in 2014, the 96 hit all targets first time (only one to do that iirc) so I cannot see how that was an issue at all.

In 2015 the Russians rigged the shooting phase to stop the 96 from fully taking advantage of its superior FCS by taking an age to erect targets when the Chinese were on the shooting course.

The 96 had to slow down not because they couldn't shoot accurately at speed, but because there weren't targets to shoot. If they had gone at combat speed, they could have exited the shooting course before the Russians had erected half their targets.

The new 96B would have upgraded FCS which would make their shooting advantage even more pronounced, but if the Russians pull the same tricks, it won't be able to fully perform to its full capabilities and would again only be able to shoot as quickly as the Russians put up targets for them to shoot.

Interesting. Now I remember when I asked myself "why does it take so long for the Chinese to fire?" during last years competition

Like someone said, it's rigged.

T It doesn't come with a commanders independent panoramic sight

Just... why ? Isnt that one of the most important things for a tank, to give it an situational awareness advantage and full hunter-killer capabilities ?

Budgettery reasons. PLAGF keeps a mix of high and low mbt, with the high being the various type 99 mbt which does come with independent commanders sight, and with the type 96 mbt as the low, with good enough FCS (e.g dual axis stabilized gun and FCS with thermal imaging capablility).

I think PLAGF is already desperate to the Tank race:)
Just kidding, PLAGF isn't buildint a special tank especially for biathlon like T-72B3M. I believe these modification is made to perform better in extreme condition i.e. plateau.
It is a massive producting war machine, some resource says a Red Army Division in Xinjiang already take the first batch equipment.

Looks like its confirmed the tanks on that rail car were indeed going to the tank biathlon in Russia:
