A great deal of hot air in essence, this time next month nobody will really care or have achieved anything with this ruling. This will however imo, have lasting damage on the domestic opinion in China as the idea that the West/Japan/Philippines are against the PRC will only gain further traction after this farce.

This decision is nothing but lawfare, and the only impact it will have, beyond giving the same media hacks another stick to beat China with, is further undermine the current western dominated 'world order'.

China was prepared to accept western written rules generally, under the assumption that those rules applied equally to all.

But by blatantly breaking its own rules like the tribunal has done by ignoring China's clearly exercised opt out rights on arbitration, it has proven beyond a doubt to China that the west doesn't really give a toss about rules or laws or fairness, and only cares about getting an edge any which way it can.

Expect China to pay western rules and laws far less heed and push harder to promote its own rules and laws on future.

Under the current arbitration, Taiping Island counts as a reef instead of an island as well. I wonder how Tsai will respond to this.

Your response is 100% predictable. Those are not "western rules and laws", Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines are not 'the west'.

China will alienate everyone on this planet that they have not bought (Lao, Cambodia), but unlike the UK or USA, China never brought any soft power benefits to the table to balance the bad.

China just wants, and takes, and wonders why everyone does not want to be economically dominated with all benefits going to China. Eventually the people of nations China has purchased the leadership off with huge contracts, will revolt.

I have read the quotes in SE Asia papers of Chinese being upset that the locals have free will and can choose to not do business with exploitative Mainlanders, or that the locals demand higher pay (Chinese say those people have black hearts), or won't tolerate Chinese expolitative business and labour practices.

The rest of the planet is not China, you don't get to force your system of 3,500 year old feudal exploitation on to the rest of us.

You are going against the entire planet earth.

The USA, UK, French, Spanish and Portuguese all had allies.

China does not.

We all know that you and China will ignore what everyone else says, and continue to exploit,

Earth is 82.5% vs. China is 17.5%.

Learn to get along with the rest of us, or learn the consequences the hard way.

It's your choice if you want to take on the entire planet and anger everyone in the region and beyond.

There is circling rumour for many, many months ... ...

Tsai Ing Wen who is always excitedly nervous and jittery and embarrassingly smitten ( for many people in Taiwan ) when she meets US official, and her party will release TaiPing island and give up its sovereignty to US.

OK, if you want to calm down a bit after circle-jerking with excitement and use your brain for a second, did you even see how big a can of worm this verdict just opened?

By ruling an island the size of Itu Aba as reef, this verdict had just destroyed the claims on SCS by ROC, Vietnam, and half of Malaysian claims as they all claim by virtue of existing islands, which had all been ruled as reefs.

By extrapolating this ruling over UNLOS, this also have serious repercussions on Japan/ Korea conflict on ECS over Dokdo/Takeshima, ROC/ Japan conflict over Okinotorishima, PRC/Japan conflict over Socotra Rock etc, as all of those are far smaller than Itu Aba and will now all be considered reefs.

I have never imagined that the PCA can be so stupid. Not only China is going to ignore this ruling, but I will imagine so would most of the SCS claimants plus many more.
