Book Description of SHOWDOWN

Will the U.S. go to war with China over Taiwan or oil? Yes-bestselling authors Jed Babbin and Ed Timperlake say Chinese aggression is virtually inevitable and in their new book, Showdown, they address the threat of mainland China and Bush's promise to defend Taiwan-at any cost. Showdown offers indispensable strategies and tactics for the U.S. to respond to the Chinese military threat in this ongoing battle for democracy and freedom.

From the Inside Flap
Are CHINA and the UNITED STATES headed for WAR?
Yes, say bestselling authors Jed Babbin (former deputy undersecretary of defense) and Edward Timperlake (veteran defense analyst) in this riveting new book that takes you from the latest developments in China’s quest to become a superpower to the possible battlefields of what might become World War III.

Babbin and Timperlake unveil China’s aggressive military buildup (more rapid than that of Nazi Germany before World War II) and expose how China is engaging in a new Cold War aimed at expanding its commercial and military reach at the expense of the United States. Babbin (a former Air Force JAG) and Timperlake (a former Marine fighter pilot) do more than offer expert analysis. In dramatic Clancy-esque style, they take you into the field with Navy SEALs and Air Force bomber pilots, invite you inside the war councils at the White House and the Pentagon, and peer within China’s own Politburo in an exciting—and all too likely—series of war scenarios.

In Showdown, Babbin and Timperlake reveal:

* The unholy alliance between Communist China and radical Islam—and a possible war over Middle Eastern oil
* How China is infiltrating Latin America—including oil-rich Venezuela—to create an anti-American axis
* How a Chinese attack on Taiwan could spark the biggest war in the Pacific since World War II
* The vulnerability of Japan and the United States to Chinese cyber-warfare
* The likelihood of a second Korean War . . . only this time, the madmen in North Korea have nuclear weapons

As Babbin and Timperlake make clear, China is the greatest—and most dangerously ignored—threat to America’s national security. If America does not deter China’s aggressive ambitions, the result could be global war. Provocative, thrilling, and must-reading, Showdown is a wake-up call for America.

Yeah, the stuff in the book seems to be absolute BS, i wonder if the CIA paid them top write it.

Islam is not radaical, Islamic terrorist groups are. And China does not associate with any of them.

China is merely starting good relations in South america. Its merely picking up the friends the u.s lost

Chinese cyber attacks are mostly instagated by chinese teenage hackers and have nothing to do with the army.

its fiction !!its a book!! not a historical document!! If you don't like it....don't read it....sooooo lets not go off on some political tirage about a work of fiction based on some fact. there has not been many books on possible china vs U.S war scenarios that I have seen. I just thought I would point this book out based strictly on the military aspect.

Is it written as a fictional story ala Clancy? I'm thinking it's probably more like two guys assessing a real world threat based ON THEIR OWN OPINION ONLY. It looks like an interesting read at any rate. Thanks for the book info utelore. :)

Edit: OK. After further review, it looks like they base a fictional scenario based on what they perceive to be real threats.

The claim quoted from the abstract of the book that china's army building is fast than Nazi Germany is insane. In my opinion, while it's understandable for those right wing writers to exaggerate the situation, it is exaggerated to such an astonishing extent even by the right wing standard....

These people seem to focus solely on some elite equipments china has introduced recent year in limited quantities, which by the way are still no match of couterparts of US. The bulk of PLA are still obsolete both equipmentwise and doctrinewise. I just don't get it when these so called elites could be so single minded and narrow-sight.

They probably argue China has some undisclosed super weapon or in the process of developing, that could be unleashed on the hapless US carriers, written many times before example Tom Clancy "Hunt for Red October". But it will be a good read, if i could get hold of it for free. These fictional stories are always entertaining.

Out of curiosity, are there similar kinds of articles (not just books) on war with various countries inside China? An obvious one would be Japan, given some of the bull that comes out from the Chinese media from time-to-time.

Or are such sentiments restricted to more personal feelings on forums, blogs, etc?

I read Jeff Head's Dragon's Fury about a possible WWIII with China etc. It also had China having an alliance with the GIR ( fictional group of countries united under the banner of islam) i'd have to say it was entertaining albeit very farfetched. In this book, China developed this LARSD thingy thats like an underwater, supercavitating torpedo which speeds up to over 600 knots, which the chinese unleashed on a carrier battlegroup and a british surface action group and decimated them both. but the book really got me thinking, what would it be like if China was the only superpower in the world? would its culture permeate every country like that of the Americans?

also in this book, china seemed to attack other countries just because their friendly to the US eg Australia which is quite a distance away from mainland PRC.
But the most outrageous ( no offence jeff if you read this)thing was the "orbital bombardment" which the U.S employed later in the series, i mean its 2006 and mankind as only ventured into space on the most rudimentary of equipment (not to belittle America's Space tech) and somehow by 2012 they all of a sudden have these fighterplane like things in space and spacefortresses which lance missiles and energy beams onto earth, killing hundreds of thousand of people in one go.

And the casualty figures were highly exaggerated, china lost 50 million armed personel?!?!?! and more in civilian casualties??

Im sorry but to date, i've never read any credible WW3 scenarios between China and the US (clancy, Jeff, patrick Robinson, etc)
