Located in the terrace of the canyon of Meigu River in southwestern China's Sichuan Province, Atu Le'er is a remote village perched on a cliff. The village is 1,400 meters in elevation and about 800 meters above the ground. A total of 72 households reside in the remote mountainous village. Children have to climb ladders made from rattan to go to school, and young people find it difficult to get married due to the isolation from the outside world.

A villager stands by the cliff to get a better mobile phone signal. The county talked about building a road in 2004 and 2009, but 50 percent of the money had to be funded by the village. The villagers cannot afford it, thus the road was never built.
