A variant of the export Type 97 exists with a flat top picattany rail called type 97nsr-a
A pakistani fellow bought one and reviewed it here:

I'm sure they could produce a variant of qbz 95-1 with the type 97 nsr-a rail if they really wanted to, but at the end of the day they are producing qbz-95-1s for the lowest denominator.
Also note the Keymod Rail slots on the side of the NSR.
That would be the best option for a whole package upgrade but as is the mentality in the PLA Command seems set on keeping it Ol'Skool, :p
Still I would like to see a smaller run of nsr-a rail qbz95-1s for SOF, and maybe marines and other RRUs as well, while keeping most 95-1s as standard.
Those would be nice as a start to a eventual whole force turnover. still the lower Rail handle seems a start

While Norinco has proven it can move ahead (other manufacturers can go even further ahead, almost caught up with the world), it's the PLA brass that in-charge of the firearms and personal equipment seems to have their heads stuck 20 years behind the clock. The PAP and police scenes fares better in this regard, though there are times stupidity such as that retarded revolver design...

QBZ-95-1 is a rifle designed with late 80s early 90s philosophy in mind. Rugged and mass-producible, with minimum ability to adapt to upgrades, but with OK performance out of the box, so that it can be mass-equipped for a mass-army. And as such, carrying handle and fixed, non-removable iron sights are a must, as both of them are made to enable abusive use by as many generations of recruits as possible.

Nowadays, in the age of - to use that overused term - 'high-speed-low-drag' military philosophy, small-arms put a lot more emphasis on SOF use and being customizable. The QBZ-95 itself isnt a bad gun. Problem is just that a brick that was designed a brick, actually is a brick in terms of ergonomics.
QBZ-95-1 only needs flat top uppers. Nothing more.

Yes, agreed 99%... not to mention there is always the issue of cost. I'm sure china's overall military expenditure is a tiny tiny fraction then than it now... which is why I saw they need to go ahead and get rid of the QBZ95 soon regardless on how 'new' the rifle or design is/was.
Unlike other country's military where it's more of an evolutionary 'upgrade', in the case of PLA it's a total system overhaul from 20-30 yrs ago.
The T97 does show good potential though.

K12 Puma chambers 18.4mm which is roughly 12 gauge. The classification assigned by the PRC may be automatic riot gun, but roughly it just means a semi automatic 12 gauge magazine fed shotgun derived from a Automatic carbine like the Saiga 12 based on the AK from Russia or the Safir T-14 based on the AR.
I reserve the term "Automatic" for more specialized systems like the AA12, Heckler & Koch HK CAWS, Daewoo Precision Industries USAS-12 and others that feature full selective fire.
