the Reboot movies don't have the luxury of the TV series character development and beyond that, this is a very different Kirk and timeline. meaning that This James T. Kirk and Crew has to come to grips with more. More thn if they are trying to surpass their parents and their heros they have to decide if they are willing to break from the other iteration.
If you are a Fan of the series and the old movies I think you should see the parallels, Star Trek the motion Picture relaunched the Enterprise against a foe who threatened the existence of Earth, A foe who was the product of Black hole slingshotting from the past.Critical to it was Mr. Spock coming to grips with his humanity an realizing he is stronger by embracing it Star Trek Launched the Enterprise against a foe who threatened Earth by using a Black hole weapon from the future. Critical to it was Mr. Spock coming to grips with his Humanity and the strength of his anger as well as that of his humanity and friendships as well as loves.
Star Trek the Wrath of Khan was the return of the crew to battle an old adversary out for revenge. who had stolen an advanced weapon and a starship with the goal of wiping out every thing Kirk stood for. it was only resolved with a sacrifice of blood
Star Trek into Darkness was the return of the crew to battle a adversary out for revenge who gains access to an advanced ship and intend to wipe out everything Kirk and Spock stand for. It was only resolved with a blood sacrifice.
Star Trek 3 The Search for Spock was the crew setting out to set right the sacrifice made by Spock and it costs the crew the Enterprise.
Star trek Beyond seems to cost the crew the Enterprise.

So far the big events overlap a bit much I guess that means we will have Whales in #4

He was giving orders in a confident way indicative of a good leader. Also, his crew made some comments suggesting their confidence in and even admiration for their leader. All evidence suggests that Kirk has matured into a competent leader.

The scenes that you say are there to just summarize the previous movies are also extending his soul searching into this film. This should have been pretty obvious when Bones gives him the line about how Kirk is still trying to be like his father. They weren't sitting there reminiscing going, "Yeah Bones, remember when I was still lost in life?". They were talking about how Kirk still hadn't come into his own.

Also, being a competent leader, and being unsure of one's self aren't mutually exclusive. Again, there's nothing wrong with some introspection and reassessing one's own views, as that is usually the start of a character arc, which can be a mark of a good story, and can also help an audience connect with that character.

The problem is that they've been doing the same character arc about daddy issues for the past two films and now possibly this one as well. As it stands now Kirk isn't a character that can that can be at the center of a drama where he reassess his views when he apparently still isn't sure what his own views are or who he is. Again, introspection can be good, but it isn't being done well here.

As Terran Empire said, it's also true that being restricted to three movies so far naturally prohibits the years of character development that the crew could have in a TV series, however that's also what exacerbates this issue of retreading the same character arc. They can't afford to keep spinning their wheels.

The one hope I have is that there are more scenes in the final film that at the very least acknowledge the passage of time and reference some development, even if it is off screen. There's been some summaries posted about various additional scenes shown to attendees at the event this trailer premiered at, which sound like that, so I'm still optimistic about this film, even if I haven't exactly sounded like that so far.

I read that 40% of Rogue One is being reshot over the summer. Every movie goes through reshoots but that's a lot if true. Then I hear contradictory statements that the reshoots are to lighten it up because of the studio paranoia over the criticism of Batman vs Superman which conflicts with the latest that they hired people who are known for their war/action direction in movies. Then the worst news is JJ Abrams is overseeing the reshoots.

I like me war/action movies especially if they're set in Starwars Uni.!! I hope you can get/buy the original war version with the version they end up with in theatres!!!

No worries those shots that wasn't put onto the opening movie will be a part of the "deleted scenes" on blue ray or dvd.

Disney wants Rogue One to have more Vader and less of a Saving Private Ryan feel. Rogue one was said to be pretty dark for a Star Wars movie according to early test screenings to Disney execs. I personally would love to see a much darker movie. But then again this is Disney. Disney owns Marvel and thats why MCU is not as nearly as dark as Daredevil, Jessica Jones or even Agents of SHIELD. Remember Ward torturing Bobbi Morse, a.k.a. Mockingbird?

Netflix Marvel and Agents of SHIELD are part of the MCU and owned by Disney by proxy. Also keep in mind that Disney used to own MIRAMAX, which produced most of the 90s Tarantino films.

True, they are part of the MCU. But Netflix Marvel and Agents of SHIELD are like the poor stepchildren. The streaming and TV shows don't even have a single mention in the Theatrical releases and from all rumors the Marvel theatrical releases won't mention anything in the TV shows for the foreseeable future, not even inhumans at least until phase 4 maybe. Chloe Bennet (Daisy/Quake) why surprising vocal about it too. So when it comes to theatrical releases, Marvel and Lucasfilms will be "child friendly" because of Disney.

This is why I think it is important that X-Men movie rights remain with Fox. Otherwise, we would never have got an R-rated Deadpool. Wolverine 3 is also going to be R-rated . I noticed, the amount of violence, blood, brutality is much higher with Fox's releases even with PG-13 ratings. Fantastic 4 should revert back to Marvel though.

Current treatment of Marvel TV stems from bad blood between producer Kevin Feige and former head honcho of the Marvel Creative Committee/current Marvel TV executive Ike Perlmutter. Once Perlmutter steps down, we'll see more collaborations between Marvel TV/Film.
