I don't either, i hope this isn't a case of throwing out continuity for the sake of being rebooting or matching the reboot.
Sadly that's the most likely outcome, so best hope for a good cast of writers and actors to carry it and hopefully it won't die in the first season. Seriously if it keeps up the tradition of mediocre writing for the majority the first two seasons that every Trek had for some reason it'll never last.
If any Treks from yesteryear existed today with all those same issues and problems today their 3rd season golden ages never would've come into being.
I hope that one of these days we can see a Star Trek spin off exclusively told from the "enemy's" (Romulan, Klingon before they made peace with the Federation) pov. Alas, I don't think that the studios are willing to take the risk.

The star of Gene Luen Yang’s upcoming series The New Super-Man, Kenan Kong Chinese hero won’t just be a a Superman with a hyphen in his superhero name. However, choosing the new Super-Man’s civilian name was the most challenging task for Yang.
In an extensive new article for , Yang covers the lengthy process of deciding Kenan’s (pronounced like “Keh-nahn”, rather than “kee-nen”) name, from making it authentically Pinyin Chinese, to deciding on something that could easily draw parallels to Clark Kent, and at one point, having to change it entirely from Kenji Kong, just in case readers assumed he was Japanese.
It’s a really fascinating insight into how Pinyin works, and Yang’s approach to writing a character who’s culture and upbringing is so important to them, and well worth a read at the link below. Meanwhile, you can get to know Kenan a little better when The New Super-Man begins in July.

I think the key point here is to potentially justify a Chinese Superman in a movie rather than sell more comics in China or to the Chinese Americans. Comic books themselves, believe it or not, are dying had have been since the comic book speculation crash of the 1990s. Nowadays, comics characters become popular because of the movies instead of vice versa.

But why? Why can't they just come up with a unique Chinese superhero with his/her own capabilities?
I came across a set of Chinese comic books called "Wind/Cloud (Storm Riders)" by Ma Rongcheng a long time ago (must be at least 15 years ago...). It's still one of my favorite comic books. It has rich mythology, amazing plot, well-written characters and wonderful drawing. They made a couple movies and some TV series based on the comic books, but never got close to the level of the comic books.
Unlike most believe, China's superhero mythology is much much older than that in the US. It dates back to the Ming dynasty in the 1500's, when a huge number novels came out describing heroes and villains with supernatural abilities, the ability to punch through walls, to fly, to control minds, to heal people, to live forever, and even approaching god-like abilities... Just imagine what I see in the "Gong Fu Panda" movies, and multiply that by about 100-1000 folds. That's what the characters in these old Chinese superhero mythology can do. "Wind/Cloud" is basically a comic book based on this kind of Chinese superhero mythology. It's amazing. I think they should make some new characters along these lines, not just some new versions of Superman/Batman, etc.

The Golden Age of comics came about during WWII ... in some ways as propaganda machines and later fuel in popularity by our boys serving overseas. Real life villains like Hitler/Nazis are often used as templates for comic villains as well. Heck in many comics the Nazis themselves were the antagonists especially in the Marvel universe.
There is really no need for China to 'copy' Superman or have an Asian superman. Not only is the origins story not matched up but China already has many 'superheroes' themselves like the mythical Monkey God etc.
China's 'Hollywood' needs to make a 'Marvel' universe of their own based on these mythical characters. I think it will become very popular just like it is in the US.
