J-10 Thread IV

Interesting configuration for the J-10A presented as the FC-20 for export at Singapore, showing 4 GB-3 250 kg LGBs ... so maybe also a configuration for the PLAAF ??

I'm quite surprised that they would want to export J-10A like this; if any orders came through, it would require reopening J-10A lines for that old style intake and also, it's just visibly inferior. I would have thought that all J-10 produced from now on would at least externally look like J-10B/C with variable avionics inside depending on how much the customer wanted to spend. To me, that would make logistics easier and keep costs down through bulk production since it would share a common air-frame with actively-produced PLA J-10.

Perhaps China is offering second hand aircraft ex PLAAF J-10A :D ... cheap and capable and have plenty airframe life with brand new WS-10A engine. PLAAF may just want to replace all with J-10B/C

I don't think J-10A is inferior at all, highly capable aircraft, especially in Asia, ME, Africa and South America

What is the price tag for FC-20 ?

Maybe CAC is looking to offload the old J10A production line now that domestic production has switched to Bs and Cs.

Unlike in the west, the Chinese don't care nearly so much about arms sales as they do about national security.

Even with the J20 progressing nicely, I think the PLA is not allowing Bs and Cs to be exported except maybe to Pakistan.

It's only after J20s start entering service in numbers that I think they might approve general J10B or C sales.

One of the concern for CAC is that it would be really hard to promote FC31 if they have never exported any 4th gen fighter. I would believe an exPLAAF J10 with export license of AL31 FN would be the so called FC20. Since the early J10 would need MLU anyway, for CAC, it will be more economic to keep producing J10 b/ c other than try to reopen J10a's production line.

I highly doubt that the PLAAF is willing to sell its in-service J-10As when they haven't fully replaced their 3rd-generation aircraft yet.

We've seen scale models of the J-10A at various airshows before, so it is more likely a token a proof that CAC is capable of building high-performance combat aircraft rather than an indication that the J-10A is cleared for export.

J-10's are produced in batches. There is no production line to be sold.

J31 is a SAC product, not CAC. That fact alone would sink the theory from that article, since even if J10s are exported, it would be CAC who sold them, and SAC (the makers of the J31) would still have no experience exporting 4th gen fighters.

There is also the fact that JF17s have already been exported to at least two customers, so CAC has already broken it's 4th gen duck.

The J10A being finally approached for export would be entirely down to the PLAAF, who probably insisted that the best fighters available cannot be exported until they themselves have something better.

Thus, as they are getting their first operational J10B/Cs, they are now finally winning to allow CAC to export the J10A.

It might not be as cost efficient or attractive to potential buyers as selling Bs and Cs, but in China just categorically doesn't mess around with national security.
