Fincantieri Cuts 1st Steel of New LSS – Logistic Support Ship for Italian Navy
The steel cutting ceremony of the LSS logistic support unit’s bow section was held today at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Castellammare di Stabia. Construction works, therefore, officially started on the first unit, as provided in the renewal plan of the Italian Navy’s fleet, which has been commissioned to Fincantieri.

Rheinmetall and the German Bundewehr have successfully tested a high-energy laser effector installed on a German warship operating on the high seas. To carry out the test, Rheinmetall mounted a 10-kilowatt high-energy laser (HEL) effector on a MLG 27 light naval gun.

This is very nice to see. Will give good testing.

By comparison, this 10 Kw laser is not as powerful as the 40 Kw laser the USS has been teting aboard the USS Ponce for some time now.

But even then, at 40 Kw, it is only able to target drones, small aircraft and small boats effectively. It will need a lot more power to take down larger military aircraft, missiles, or damage a ship. And the US Navy is developing such lasers.

You have to start somewhere! Even with 10 kW. Seeing this kind of weapons being slowly tested and deployed in the near future is surely exciting.

Yes it is...it is very exciting.

I feel privileged to see it happening...and with the coming rail guns as well.

Truly things that as a kid and young man I read about as pure science fiction are becoming reality in my own life time.

NHI successfully completed the test campaign of the self-protection suite of the Norwegian NH90. The aircraft NH90 NNWN01 prototype was manned by Finmeccanica Helicopter Division flight test team (Test Pilot Roger Mowbray and Flight Test Engineer Fabrizio Santarossa) and supported by a multi-national, multi-disciplined team from several organisations.

This comprehensive suite encompasses a Radar Warner Receiver (AN/ALQ-211(v)5 from HARRIS) able to detect, locate and identify any radar guided threats at long distance around the NH90, a Laser Warning System (AN/AVR-2A(v)1 from Goodrich), a Missile Warning System (AN/AAR-54) from Northrop Grumman) and also a Counter Measures Dispensing System (AN/ALE 47 (H) from BAE).
