Why not the new CCL universal VLS?

If anything, that should be a far more flexible option, as it comes with a variety of cell depths, and should be able to handle far more munitions types. So they would use both long and short tube cells to maximise the number of cells they can fit on the ships.

The first telltale sign would be the presence of slanted AShM racks, however I won't be too hopful in this regard, because the DDG 167 design might not have envisioned such VLS designs. In terms of timeframe, it'd be more reasonable that it made provisions for the VLS that now in-use by the 054A class. However, if installled with CCL VLS system, then the South Sea Fleet would have one more LACM capable platform.

If they are installing a CCL VLS, it would make all this effort that much more worth it. To simply refit into another 054A seems like a waste of 167's larger displacement.

Since that structure was removed, the ship will most likely get the HQ-16 SAM as it's readily available and mature. Installing a similar foreign defense system like Shtil would only increase costs for no major benefit.
I tend to agree that the likelihood is HQ-16.

But I also believe that Shitl would provide a real upgrade over HQ-7 too. Not as much as the VLS though and for my money, I think (and hope) that is what they are doing there.

How many ships on the planet have been updated from a launcher to vls?
Doesnt it require a lot of structural work to strenghten the hull?

Update on the 167's refit. I see Top Plate, a new surface search radar midship, and possibly a data antenna above the hangar. Also, it looks like she has a forward VLS module. I wonder which type it is.

Seems like the aft 37mm guns have been replaced by the engagement radars and the type 1130 CIWS. Two additional engagement radars have been installed on the bridge. As far as VLS goes, I think it's the same one on the type 054A.

All in all, it's a bigger version of the type 054A with a bigger punch.
