If your world is USN centric then the differentiation is irrelevant because all the carriers come with CAT. However outside of the USN, the distinction is useful in any conversation because there is a clear divide between the two. As for the PLAN which is the nature of this thread, we expect the migration to CAT will eventually happen but until then a lot of the conversation will revolve around this.

Yes, that's why I was specific in my explanation. ;) and for the sake of this forum and others I made that distinction. In the real world though they are all carriers. An admiral is not going to say find me that Chinese STOBAR or catobar...he's going to say find me that Chinese carrier. Similarly potus or the CNO is not going to ask where is the nearest catobar? Lol

Anyway I think that was what my shipmate Popeye was alluding to.

What experience does Chinese ship building industry have with large capacity IEP?

Britain risked it because Royce Rolls had substantial experience builting 20-30MW IEPs for cruise ships. Outside cruise ships large capacity IEP is rare in merchant ships. Also reliability of large capacity IEP on cruise ships have not been good. What is worse is when multi-shaft IEP malfunctions, there is much higher chance of total propulsion failure than with multi-shaft conventional diesel or gas turbine propulsion, where failure is usually limited to one shaft.

I think there has been a number of decently sized coast guard cutters that have domestically developed IEP, however it is hard to ascertain just how many ships may or may not have IEPS. That is probably a better question asked on CDF where more individuals have that knowledge.

Anyway ... in the next few months I hope to see lots of progress on the new PLAN CV. Hopefully we will be able to see if the ship has cats or not.

Well it seems like we will see a finished up hull soon. Seeing the prefab blocks and current state. It will be very exiting.
And hopefully some decent shots to compare to the kuznetsov class.
Lets hope on a bigger eye candy then the already beautiful Kuznetsov and ex Varyag.
I really like sovjet style carriers. They look mighty and dangerous :)

I have seen the Kuznetsov once on the ocean. We where trailing here and escorting through channel between the Netherlands and GB.

China has IEP tech ready for 054 sized ships, rumored to be 054B. Maybe it's already under construction.
Scale it up and it can be applied to 055. But timing is not right for the first batch. Likely second batch together with rail gun.

Scale it further up it can be applied to carriers. Timing is not right for 001A or 002, more likely for the first nuclear powered one, with EMCAT. it may sound risky, but by that time china would have four carriers already and unless Chinese leadership is really paranoid she can take the time to test, design and build it properly. Plus many of the electric related stuff would have been well validated on 055.

Personally I'd like to see conventional powered EMCAT on 002, and I think it's technically possible. But the timing is not exactly right and I doubt China's planners have this kind of appetite.
